Which range rover?

I have a max budget of £25k

For well under that I can get a low mileage, fully loaded 2012 old shape.
Or for my full budget with a bit of haggling, I can just get a higher mileage new shape.
Obviously the new shape looks more modern but what would you suggest?
Would the last of the LR322 be more reliable than the first of the LR405 models?
Other than looks, how different are they?
Being a new model, would a LR405 vogue be as well equipped as a LR322 Autobiography?
For either model, what are the must have options?

Perhaps consider buying, say, a Toyota, or a Mitsubishi?

You're probably not wrong! I'm changing my 2008 Bentley Flying Spur Speed for a more practical vehicle (shorter, more modern, bit better on fuel, hatch boot) but want to keep the sense of luxury hence Range Rover

I have had both. Newer model is definitely more refined and less wallowy (?) but older model feels more robust. There is also noticeably more room in the cabin in the older ones.
The last of the L322’s were pretty sorted from a reliability perspective, in 6 years of ownership I never had a problem but the first of the L405’s were pretty problematic. I have a16MY and it has been back countless times with problems, 2 new turbos, front suspension 4 times ....
I may just have been unlucky but I’ve always felt I shouldn’t have got rid of the old one !!!

A sorted L322, with a V8 and supercharger, is worth having. Finding one in your budget, that isn’t knackered, might be more of an issue. Look for a ‘Westminster’ if possible.
