Mainstream cars reached equipment max?

Ok had a bit of a pay rise so I’m looking at golf r mk7 possibly estate version.

I do 25k miles a year so I know diesel will be better but living in London diesel tax is not worth it.

My main gripe I’m finding is most cars are so poorly specced not just golf.

My 03 Saab 93ss aero (cost £500 2 years ago) has literally everything apart from adaptive cruise and Bluetooth not sure if they were around in 2003.
Apart from the wing mirror that doesn’t look down when I reverse it all works.

I wouldn't call a Golf R poorly equipped:

Adaptive cruise, powerfold mirrors, apple carplay/android auto on 65 plate onwards, climate control, adaptive xenons, front and rear sensors etc etc.

Also, you would be fine with a similar diesel in london as anything late 2015 onwards has to be Euro 6 so is ULEZ compliant.

The only toys really needed in a car is.
NAV
DAB
Aircon
Heated seats
Power Windows.

Everything else is frivolous.

We have a GTE MK7.5 and its got all the above + everything else which I'm sure the R will have as standard. I even found out the other day after 19 months of ownership it has cruise control, adaptive cc and lane departure which is seems pointless in the UK especially London.

That’s my point. My Saab has all of that bar adaptive cruise and Apple play. My car is from 2003 so most consider it ancient yet when I was looking at specs I’m thinking yep got most of that.

I thought they were making it tougher from 2021
