Any ideas on scrapping car?

For the sake of the moderators this is in no way, and I repeat absolutely not a request for someone to buy my car. please don’t think I am trying to circumvent posting rule 12 G and I am not. I just need some help and advice!!!!!

I have a car which has been condemned and therefore needs to be scrapped. it is a big four-wheel-drive car. It still drives but will not pass the next MOT.

I have never scrapped a car before and therefore do not know the best way of extracting the most value from it. Do I just take the good bits off it and sell them on eBay and then drive it to the local scrapyard?

Various options -

• Put the whole thing on ebay, well pictured, describe all the issues thoroughly, put "Spares or Repair" in the title, make it clear its not going to pass the next MOT without a lot of work, put it on at a 99p start and take what you can get for it. You might be surprised.
• Sell what you can off it on ebay, scrap the rest.
• Scrap it as is.

When you get as far as scrapping it, when i was trading we did the following :-

• Have the battery ready to come out - take it out when you get to the scrap yard, weigh it in separately.
• Have the wheel nuts ready to come off - when you get to the yard, get them to forklift it up and take the wheels off. Get the tyres removed, sell them separately, get the alloys stripped (remove weights, centre caps, valve), weigh them in separatey.
• Catalytic converter - cut it off and weigh it in seperately
• CD Player - take it out and sell it

Google car scrappers and pop in your details. They'll advise wrt how much they'll give you (small hatch eg clio will be st). You decide if you think it's worthwhile - they collect hand you a cheque and Bob's your uncle

Almost guaranteed to get you the least amount of money.

Ebay Spares or Repairs.

Honest description, some good detailed piccies of problem areas, no reserve and give it a week on the auction.

If its a big 4x4 it will probaly be bought by an exporter who will ship it to somewhere very dusty for either repair or parts use.

Sold as seen on the receipt, no warranty given or implied, take cash and jobs a good'un.

Do the scrappies not get a bit funny if you remove the valuable bits? Are they happy to just take the shell rather than the whole thing?

I have this rose-tinted vision of them carefully removing every part and cataloguing it and selling it on eBay or putting it on a shelf in their store, but I suspect in reality they just crush the cars and sell the metal.

If its an old car scrappies wont want it. They only want fresh stuff they can resell interiors, gearboxes, engines, turbos, etc off. If its some old shed it will be weighed in as scrap metal.

IF your scrappie takes it, he'll just be taking it and weighing it in somewhere - do that yourself and cut out the middle man.

A battery i think weights in at maybe £12-15 for a biggish one.

A set of bare alloys of a decent size might be £60 ish.

Tyres will usually resell on facebook or gumtree if relatively cheap. A working CD player with code is still worth a small amount too.

As long as they get what they're expecting, they're fine with it, if they turn up thinking they're getting a whole car and it's just a shell, they'll be understandably annoyed.

Stripping all the parts and selling yourself will likely get you the most money, but it's time/hassle to do that, so it really depends where you sit in terms of what the increased return is worth to you.

I've found the wheels off and battery out recovers a worthwhile amount for not a big amount of effort.

If they turn up expecting a 2 ton 4x4 and get a 3/4 ton shell and chassis, they might be a bit put out.

Yes, if he strips it and expects someone to pick it up then he'd need to make them aware.

I got £130 scrap for a 15 year old Corsa with a thoroughly fked engine through one of the ‘scrap my car’ type websites. They came and collected it & gave me a cheque in the spot.

Post on eBay with honest description.

My uncle used to buy an export “scrap” cars abroad.
Some could be used some stripped for parts.

I scrapped a Honda Accord (04 reg) using the cartakeback website and they paid me £ 192 and collected it in a trailer ,it was not drive-able as the rear suspension had collapsed

Dont go to the local scrappie as they will will pay just £ 50 at most!

Agreed - as already said, a scrap yard wont want it for parts. Best bet - if the likes of cartakeback done offer a good price - is to get it weighed in for scrap metal (after removing aforementioned bits).
