Hyundai i30N Performance VS Mk8 Ford Fiesta ST3??

Hi all,

I’m looking at getting myself into one of the above cars within the next couple of months - but I’m massively torn between to two. I’ve driven both and love both, but each in their own way.

No doubt the i30N is a much better car, more “grown up” etc, but I’ve always been a fan of a Fast Ford.

Downside for the Fiesta is that for the spec and colour options I want, it would be a 3-4 month factory order, whereas I could have an i30N within a month.

The Hyundai is obviously more expensive - but not MASSIVELY more, so would the extra monies be worth it?

Any advice PHers?

I would go for a ST3 myself. I found the cabin much nicer.

It's a weird situation as the I30N is the next size up in hatchback if you need that but they are very comparable cars from a fun perspective. The discounts on a I30N put it at 24k vs 19k for a fiesta. I would note that the face lift I30 is due summer 2020 which might be the one to have if you can stand the wait.

Personally I'd go for the Hyundai as its a bit rarer, a little bit more utility and the residuals will be better.

I30N get on car wow looking just under 25k new. You could possibly get a second hand one under 20k as people are buying them ( I'm saying kids ) realising they cant afford them and want to sell them, I spotted one yesterday he owned it 3 months. Some right bargains to be had.

I30N real world I am getting about 30mpg, on a run low 40's (on a motorway to Germany) You can tell some things are cheap but overall its a lovely place to be. I have had mine since September and done 3k in it. No major problems apart from the passenger door handle snapping but replaced under warranty.

Once bedded in N mode is fun but bloody firm so N mode custom with sports suspension is the one. Daily its in normal mode. Diff is handy also.

I went for hatch as the back in the fastback was much better and way more head room for passengers.

The Hyundai would be my pick out of the two for me it's the sweeter steer but I'd actually be looking at the new Focus ST at which point from what I've read it gets very (I haven't driven the new ST) close.

Had a go in Focus ST, nice spec but annoyed me a bit that you can't pick and choose with the modes, I think the fiesta and i30n got it right in that respect.

Another considerations is the Megane, very keen offers on it at the moment and according to the last EVO the non-cup car is the sweet spot in the range.

Yeah, I think the Megane 280 just about pips the i30N for me but probably not by much.

I'd usually say that the Fiesta will be the more fun car to drive, with it being smaller, lighter and more nimble, but the Hyundai makes it very close. The i30 is a bigger car, so more practical and maybe a tad more grown up, but it still makes all the right noises.

The i30N wins for me out of those two but I'd also take a look at the Megane.

I would go for the Fiesta purely as it's available as a 3 door... but that's just personal preference. The i30N is one of my favourite hot hatches out there though, especially the rarity factor!
