Help - New Daily With Lots Of Requirements!

Afternoon all. I'm looking for a new daily and I've narrowed it down to quite a specific set of requirements. Problem is, there seems to be only a tiny handful of cars out there that match the criteria - anything I'm missing?
Needs to:
- be as economical or better than my current mk5 Golf GTI
- petrol as only do ~8k miles a year
- big enough for 2 growing kids and a cockapoo but not a massive barge
- be German ideally (I like my German metal). Possibly Jap.
- automatic
- due to the kids/dog thing, estate/MPV/SUV I guess?
- age not a problem - been looking at old Merc S124s, E36/E46 3-series
- budget of around £5k
So far on the list in some kind of order is:
- E91 3-series. I'd have to persuade the wife a 330i would be a good idea as the 320i is a bit gutless I've read?
- B8 A4 Avant? Seems to be a few Multitronic S-Lines floating around in my budget with the 1.8TFSI engine.
- Merc C-Class. Know nothing about the C-Class of around 2008 > 2011 vintage. Kinda like the outside looks but the interiors look a bit crap vs BMW and Audi of that era. Am I wrong to not take a look at them as there are loads of petrol options for around £5k.
- E46 3-series. Again, a 330i would be the only option here I reckon and it'd need to be a high spec and very late model.
- VW Passat of some description?
- Seat Exeo - basically a B6/B7 A4 Avant? Kinda kooky looks but worth a look? Not sure about availability of petrol engines?
- Octavia vRS? Had a manual 2.0TFSI one waaay back and just remember the build quality being massively lacking vs the BMW we replaced it with
- we don't need MASSES of extra space - would a Mini Clubman be worth a look?

Looks like we're going to get a Clubman Cooper S. Any reason why we shouldn't? Had a look at a couple of standard Cooper Clubmans and impressed with the build quality and nice cabin... plus they're not standard rep-mobile stuff like the other options at this price point. Budget gone up to about 7 grand too...
