So having seen the light with 'day to day' car running costs(i've a toy car and motorbikes), a recent 2017 civic estate has shown 11k and 60mpg average is a thing.

we've sold the Mrs car and would like something in the same forumula.

I'm thinking honda HRV(1.6 oil burner like above).
Suzuki swift sz5 auto? Auto as its 6 speed so will be better on the motorway.
Honda civic hatchback

what else should I look at? or be thinking of. ideally no more than 4 years old, will do an honest 50mpg, quirky/interesting.

Our Renault Clio dCi EDC is very economical indeed, 6 speed auto and will easily do 65-70mpg on a run. Day to day commuting sees 55mpg and in 11000 miles it's never dropped below 46mpg even round the doors. We paid £9k for ours at 3 years old and 24k on, top spec Dynamique S Medianav has nav, bluetooth, climate and cruise along with keyless go.

Plenty of choice on the market and dead cheap to run, insurance is less than our previous Swift and it's £0 to tax (65 plate model). Available in some funky colours such an NHS blue or highlighter yellow, plus numerous red/black/white combinations.

You'll always wish you'd gone for the 120d but I'd go for the Civic or other suggestions first.
