I have a budget of 16-20k, and I want an automatic with a quiet interior a smooth ride and heated leather seats, and preferably something I can get in and out of without bending too much. Any suggestions please?

I always forget about this one, so much car for your money. If I didn't need an estate it would definitely be on my list.

Seconded. My A4 is super quiet too.

Thirded for the A4. Quietest car I've had, and I now have an S90 which is noisier.

Whatever you choose, make sure you get a saloon so you isolate the road noise from the back axle, an estate or hatch will resonate the sound and it will reach you.
I find this is more influential on noise than diesel over petrol at cruising speeds.
Choose your tyre brand carefully.
Keep your tyres at the "Economy" or "Fully loaded car" pressures.

I suggest a Lexus RX450. Smooth, quiet, 30mpg even though a big SUV due to hybridness. Painless and its a Toyota so won't go wrong much.
