BMW Z1 experiences?

I posted in the motorsport forum a while ago, saying I was getting out of racing my car, and using another that I’d been offered free drives and maintenance (my dad’s, he’s retiring aged 81, and still quick!). His car is a family heirloom, will never be sold, so there’s no point in keeping mine (same series), although it is considerably quicker. I’d just rather drive something that has proper family history.
I had the intention of selling the race car for circa £25k (historic saloon) and then using half of it as a lump sum on the mortgage and the rest on an ‘everyday’ classic, the most left field version of which I could think of was a ginetta g15.
I’m now in a fairly fortunate situation where I could potentially drop the idea of the mortgage thing, and instead once selling the race car and waiting a year I could possibly reach £50k.
So, using the ‘you only live once’ principle, and accepting that while I have a decent budget, it’s not massive, What would you suggest, given I generally like pre-80’s cars, like something ‘different’ and have a medium mechanical ability?
The original low budget for me centred on a ginetta g15 or at the top end of the budget, a low to medium caterham.
With the increased budget, Elan sprint is the favourite, but I’m also considering later cars.
Whilst not a road rocket, does anyone have any experience of a BMW Z1? I realise they would be totally different, but I’d really like something I would keep forever (and I’m not a serial car changer).
The ultimate would be a F355, but even in non millions world it’s out of my range by quite a factor. I’m doing one more season in my current race car, so don’t expect an ‘I bought this’ update any time soon, but I’d like options below £50k?

Personally, I think if a Z1 is on your radar, i'd look at the last Z3M Roadsters with the S54 engine as a nicer, slightly better alternative. Very idiosyncratic, by no means perfect, but a great balance between classic and new.
Z1 is interesting as a concept, but not that great an experience. Just my view. I'd have one in my garage, but wouldn't drive it much over cars with a more intetesting driving experience.
