Howdy.
Looking at a car with the above engine, with the 7 speed dsg.
anyone had much experience with them? Just how good are they on fuel? Smooth enough? reliable?
I'm tempted by something like this...

I also like these Leon's but have never driven any VAG car before. The engine seems to be a good blend of performance and economy which is appealing.
How are the interiors of the Leon, I've heard it's not on the Golf or A3 standard but do the cars feel well put together and do they have a 'solid' Germanic feel and finish or more akin to say Ford/Vauxhall and bit more rattly?

Not sure about other 1.4 TSI's, but the Twincharged 1.4 TSI in the Fabia vRS/ Polo GTi/ Ibiza Cupra was notoriously unreliable!
Drank oil. Many suffered full engine failures. Mine blew up after 30k miles.
The DSG is a great box though. Very smooth and easy to drive. The engine was great too, 180bhp and 40+ mpg, just not reliable.

I think the newer 1.4 TSI with 150hp is a 3-pot turbo, never heard a bad word about them. But yes the older twincharged engines on the other hand... Damn shame really as have always been quite tempted by the Fabia vRS but wouldn't risk it because of the reputation that lump has.Drank oil. Many suffered full engine failures. I have an 67 1.4 DSG Seat Leon ST and its generally pretty good.
Interior isn't bad at all, pretty functional, but easy to use. Surprisingly in in the 18 months I've had it, nothing has gone wrong, and zero squeaks or rattles anywhere.
I've only done 10k miles, but my lifelong MPG is 45, which isn't bad I think (that's generally town/shorter distances, with a couple of 300mile trips up north).
Negatives? The drivetrain can be very jerky. I have trouble pulling smoothly away from lights/standstill and get an annoying jerk. Also there's a torque surge early in the rev range, which makes pulling smoothly difficult also - I'll either go very slowly, or I get the wheels spinning.
It's miles away from the smoothness of a torquiest converter box.
(Full disclosure - I use hand controls, so it could be my style, or the way they're set up. Ive never had this issue on any car I've had though).
