New car, wrong plates

Hi folks,

Bought a new Mazda CX5 back in May from Border Cars in Dumfries. My insurance company got in touch yesterday to say the registration details I supplied didnt match up with the DVLA: SY19 XXX on the car versus SJ19 XXX on the DVLA.

I've rechecked the invoices and low and behold SJ19 XXX is correct so looks like I need to go back to the dealer and ask them to correct the problem...the only issue is that Border Cars appeared to go into administration in July!

Presuming that I just suck it up, pay a local garage £50 for a new set of plates and move on?

Having looked back at the paperwork I dont see a V5 anywhere. The car is on finance, so I'm assuming that the finance company has it and if I buy outright at end of term that the V5 will then transfer over to me? Had a BMW on finance before the Mazda and cant for the life of me remember if I had the V5 or not during the finance term.

Yes, feeling like a bit of a numpty and expect I'll receive a bit of a bashing for this!

Unless it’s a lease car, you should have the V5.

A set of number plates should cost much less than £50.

If it is a lease car, call the lease company. They sometimes make and issue their own plates (Alphabet etc) and may just send you some out. Either that or just get a letter from them and get some plates made. Failing that, order some off ebay!

Agree with this. Remember to read the ad properly and provide copies of the documents that they require, unless you buy it from a dodgy dave.

Border cars (Workington) got my plate wrong by a single digit back in 2012. Noticed by my dad a couple of days later.

They had the decency to be reasonably embarrassed, but then I ended up watching a rock ape literally tear the plates off (self adhesive mount) and put the correct ones on about 10 degrees off horizontal. I was not impressed.

Thanks folks...as much as I'd like to give the black marker approach a try I think I'll go down the ebay route.

Will also follow up, presumably with DVLA, to get the V5. Looks like that costs £25...a small price for my tardy approach in the first place.

My mates dad had a 1977 Mk3 Cortina in 1979. It’s plates were UFV for several years until someone noticed it should have been UVF when about 6yrs old. It never got spotted till then.

Of course nowadays you could expect no less than a full refund and a brand new Mercedes for the stress.

I was looking at getting a set of plates made up y'day.
£20 online, delivered next day (simple Google search).

Wanted them today so just paid £30 at local dealer (that is the price that Halfords were charging) and they were happy to match price. As I said, I wanted them today and had the necessary paperwork so just went ahead. I believe you can get them for £20 in your hand on Thursday and not HAVE to provide paperwork....

I know it’s not a big deal but the car belongs to the finance company so they should provide, or pay for, replacement plates.

Many Ebay sellers don't ask for new plates.
Don't specifically search for one that does...makes no difference to you other than to add complexity to the purchase.

I brought a used many many owner VW van in 1988, had reg G328 on front and G382 on back, one on front was same as log book.. It was still on the original dealer plates and I sold it on as floor rotted out around pedals, hence I could no longer brake or accelerate.
Saw it again 2-3 years later on road, obviously floor repaired, and the plates were the same. in those days MOT was up on ramp quick check underneath while you were in car/van and then use lights and horn as requested and here's your pass.

Off Topic - my local Halfords aren't doing plates at all at present. They had their permit (or whatever it's called) withdrawn. Some of the staff were doing too many favours apparently.
