Do you feel irritated when buying any product and discover the price quoted is without VAT so it is 20% more ? So why when buying cars especially expensive vehicles do we tolerate the manufacturers games when it comes to extras.The gap between base price and final price often is so great that quoting a base price is totally misleading. How many basic spec Mclarens, Ferraris are there on the road, ?

I've never seen a new car marketed with supposedly free extras that I later find out that I have to outrageously pay for.

Currently I have a few price lists for my possible next purchase, and they all clearly set out the prices for various trim levels including VAT and the cost of options.

My point is can you actually buy a basic spec car from certain manufacturers. I am not suggesting extras should be free.

As far as Super car brands go I think you'll find that a 'base price' car with no options doesn't exist. Certain brands may let you get as far as specifying a no cost paint colour and some wheels so it moves but any seat option will likely have a cost attached to it.
From an observer looking in to this world it may appear misleading, but clients who operate at this level know they will be adding easily £20k+ in options.
Maybe that is why brands do it this way as essentially everything on/in the car can be tailored to an individuals tastes, essentially the brand are just supplying the blank canvas of a body and drive-train.

There's no reason you couldn't buy a 'standard' car. If you want an 812 Superfast with no options, you can spec one on the configurator and I expect that if you have the money then Ferrari would build you one.

I think the issue comes that when you want to get rid of it, the 'marker' would dictate some 'essential' options and you'll get kicked in the balls on value or sit with it forever. If the money isn't an issue for you then no problem, but TBH if the money isn't an issue in the first place then throwing £30k+ on options probably isn't the end of the world for you anyway. It's all self perpetuating.

What irks me is adverts showing top spec models, with metallic etc, and the headline price for a basic spec.

Yeah, that drives me nuts too. Brilliant looking car with "£200 per month" in font size 800 next to it, then the small print in font size 2 says "model shown £900 per month"

Why does it drive you nuts?

It's telling you the model shown is more expensive. Seems fair enough.
