G'day guys,
I am a new poster but interested to hear your thoughts. I am looking at getting a new car and live in Australia.
I am considering a second hand BMW M135i, M235i, M140i or M240i. I am hoping to get your thoughts on the advantages and negatives of these cars.
I am looking to buy a second hand car, preferably from a dealer to get the guarantee and some form of warranty as well as hopefully some included servicing. Looking for below 20,000km ideally.
In terms of driving experience, my current impression from reading around is that the 2 series has a slight advantage (whether I could perceive such a difference I am not entirely convinced). However, it seems like whatever I get out of those options will be a hoot.
I am also not too fussed about interior design. As long as it can play bluetooth and have a comfortable driving position it will be fine.
I am looking to have this car for the next 10 years so trying to put a significant amount of thought into it.
Currently, there are not many M135i's with such low km on the market.
The 35i's are of course cheaper than the 40i's and the 1 series cheaper than the 2 series. However, is an M240i worth the extra price? Are there any issues associated with B58 to watch out for compared to the N55? It seems like the B58 is torquey-er, especially low end, and slightly quicker with better fuel economy.
What are your thoughts on an appropriate number of miles/km to get a good price efficiency?
You all seem very knowledgeable so I am keen to hear your impressions. It is quite an exciting problem to have frankly but I still would like to make an informed choice.

My wife's m235i is a great car, its remapped and is quicker than my old e46 m3, mpg is not bad for the performance, its a good all round performance orientated daily drive, the only down side is limited rear passenger space but you are looking at the wrong cars if that's important to you. The cost difference between the 240i and the remapped 235i is a good nod towards the 235i and we have been very happy with it for the last 20 months and highly recommend it to anyone

I could not tell a M135 (late model just prior to M140) from an M140, there is a difference on paper, and perhaps it is noticeable if driven literally back to back, but 3 or 4 days apart nothing stood out as being massively better about either.
I managed to get a great deal on an M140 but would have had no issues with an M135 if the right car/ deal was there.
The M140 is meant to be better on fuel.
