I'm looking to buy a car for my 18yo son, probably fiesta/polo/fabia/yaris and see that there's better value with low mileage / later cars when they are a cat S/N.

How much does this affect the insurance? I know the resale will be less but I'm not fussed about that for a car bought for around £1500 originally.

Any other issues I should look out for with CAT S/N?

I know someone whose BMW E46 325i Touring was made a Cat S last year.

He opted to keep the car, get it repaired and carried on insuring it with the insurer that gave it the "Cat" marker - although it should have been a Cat N anyway as nothing structural was damaged. His insurer just couldn't be bothered to send an engineer to inspect it. mad

My main concern would be finding out when the car got given "Cat" status - I'd walk away from anything that had that marker applied in the first few years of its life, but with a 14 year old 3 Series it doesn't take much for it to be uneconomical to repair!
