My Golf GTi 2006 has served me well, it has about 75k miles on the clock. A few small issues, something drains the battery on occasion (thinking it's the window wiper) and oil sensor seems to have fault, runs good though.
However, if I come into some money next year and prices come down I want new motor. The new GTIs are nice but maybe not overly exciting.
I am looking at all options, not keen on Audis really. I like some of the merc hot hatches. What you all think of the 2018 / 2019 merc a35?

A35 was only introduced with this generation of mercs.
Both my work friend and Jeremy Clarkson love it.
Reviews on the internet are mixed. Lack of character in the engine and poor ride are common complaints. Also, you need premium pack for the blinged up external looks now. Great lease/pcp rates though if thats your thing.

Thought the OP would like to know that I took delivery of a brand-new A35 AMG just three months ago, to use as a normal high-mileage 'daily driver'. It replaced a series of BMWs and Jaguars, but this time around I concluded that I needed a physically smaller car, with no less performance than before.
Much analysis, and soul searching, followed, the final choice having to be between a VW Golf R (which is just about to be an obsolete model) or the A35 AMG. Both have typically German-assembled, high-quality seven-speed automatic transmissions, and four-wheel-drive. What's not to like, I thought, the only factor tipping the balance being that my son already has a Golf R, so we didn't want two near-identical machines in the family ?
But with 300bhp from 2-litres, a cruising speed of whatever 'Good Morning Officer' doesn't notice, and the sort of 30 - 80mph acceleration which makes me giggle every time I indulge myself, I'm totally content.
And don't ask me why I haven't opted for an A45 - for all that extra money, the long wait for UK supplies to arrive, and (they say) a much harder ride (and character) - made that decision for me.
