Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a used VW scirocco 2.0l TDI 140, I've got a budget of about 5k and I'm seeing a couple of them on the weekend. They all seem to have about 80kish on the clock and range from 09 to 11 plates. I was just wondering if there are any owners/previous owners out there who could let me know how the car is reliability wise, mpg, problems to look out for/ask about and how they got on with it day to day.

Any advise is appreciated!

The GTC is really good value and kit for the money but one has to ask why they depreciated so much. Are they not a very heavy car with an old agricultural lump?

The 140 is a good car not a lot goes wrong with them, but unless the Scirocco was high spec I'd probably go an Astra GTC in SRI trim:
Had the Astra and now have the Scirroco.....Scirroco a better car by a country mile IMO.

The Astra is definitely the better buy. The same money gets a faster, fresher car by some margin.

I find the astra spec differences confusing. The 'limited edition' has less than the SRI. Is the 2.0 diesel any good?

The Astra weighs about as much as the moon. We have had 2 sciroccos and a Gtc in the household and scirocco wins easily.

Cheers! I’ve also had a GTC in the past, it felt poorly put together and cheap

Having driven both I'd say the Scirocco has the better cabin but I prefer the Astra's seats both diesel units are good, the Astra is 90kgs heavier.

I actually prefer the look of the Astra I'd say test drive both & see what suits you.

Yes, didn't you say elsewhere that your GTC was a 1.4T? Both the 118bhp and the 138bhp petrol turbo models have identical torque figures of 148 lbs/ft. It's not a lightweight car by any stretch, and those stats just aren't enough to shift it. The 2.0 CDTi at 163bhp is more like it, with 258 lbs/ft of torque. Whilst an extra 25bhp may not sound like a lot, the extra torque of the diesel makes a difference, particularly given the modern Vauxhall trend of putting very long gearing in their petrol cars. The 2.0 CDTI is a second quicker than the 138bhp petrol 0-60 and nearly two seconds quicker than the 118bhp model, and no doubt the acceleration once rolling puts the diesel further ahead. With bhp output like that, those petrols might as well have been N/A.

Whilst I don't think any diesel four cylinder is really going to deliver a stunning turn of pace, the 2.0 CDTi has always been impressive in the cars I've tried it in. The pick of the engines of the GTC (aside from the obvious VXR model, which is really it's own car rather than a trim or engine level) is surely the BiTurbo at 192bhp and nearly 300 lbs/ft of torque. However, they're pretty rare and easily the most expensive of the bunch.

I got the greatest idea of its weight when I jacked the thing up and the pressure through the jack damaged the pavement.

It was the wife’s car not mine but every time I drove it I felt like it was a massive heavy car with a tiny engine. The fuel consumption at about 34 mpg was pretty crap for such a tepid car. Still it was better than my current v90s though ha ha

The wife’s scirocco r line 150 diesel is going back to the lease company in jan or Feb as it’s just not practical now we have a baby. Shame because with the nappa leather it’s quite a nice place to sit and gets double the mpg of the v90.

It’s been faultless in almost 3 years apart from a thing it does where it stalls at about 30mph occasionally when you change down approaching a junction. It’s a bit odd but according to VW there’s nothing wrong with it. I think it’s an issue linked to the stop start system to be honest.

Yes, I wouldn't want to drop one on my foot, put it that way!

I have to agree that apart from the VXR the next best pick is the BiTurbo but they're a rare car to find.

Had the same engine in a mk6 Golf and had no issues. Plenty of mid range shove and averaged 45-50 mpg with a heavy right foot. I imagine the Scirocco equivalent will be even nicer.

Only thing is my Golf was affected over the emissions scandal so I suspect the Scirocco would have been too. Might be worth checking what the fix actually is (never did mine) as I remember reading that some owners weren’t/aren’t happy!
