Why are they so cheap?
Discussion
Hi everyone,
Still looking for a car as my test comes closer. I have found these 2 Fiestas in the classified section but can't figure out why they're so cheap. I know one of them has a dent on the nearside front as per the photos and they both have a higher than average mileage, but is there anything else I should be noticing? One of them has an expired MOT, but they said they would put that on. Just a bit wary and confused

Two different cars. Ecoboost is good fun compared to the TDCi but has more potential for bork compared to the 15+-year-old Peugeot HDi unit.
Ecoboost doesn't take high mileage and abuse either from what I've gathered.
That 125hp unit is a riot though, drove one with the 6-speed DCT and it sounds lovely with a new exhaust

The first one has gone over 20K between its last few services, which isn’t ideal. Not mentioned on the second one, so probably worse.
There’s a mindset in the UK that cars die at 100K, so that’s limiting their value. To be fair, with the age they are I’d be thinking they’ve likely had quite hard lives.

Have you considered a MK1 Ford Focus?
Very cheap to buy, parts plentiful as there were quite a few in circulation. They tend to take the abuse quite well too, this is coming from a current owner. Over 10 years, mainly stop start motoring and just keeps going.maintenance v cheap too.
This is likely an unfair statement but I wouldn't touch ecoboost cars with a bargepole, just too many issues for my liking. They seem 'fragile' compared to the older and admittedly less powerful/more inefficient na petrol engines.

A lot to consider here, thank you everyone who has responded so far.
Do you think they are worth looking at? I obviously don't want to buy something that will die on me a couple of months in and then cost an arm and a leg to fix, but like the look of them. It will mostly be a short commute car as I will use it more for getting from A to B than anything else.

Out of the 2 it would have to be the ecoboost for me, its a great little engine. However if your only after an A to B car with the occasional motorway stint have a look at one of these

Also available in the form of a Skoda Citygo, aim for the 75bhp version. Oh and have a look at the Panda with the twin air.

I'm really quite fond of my Seat Mii. Mine's only the 60hp version, but from what I gathered when I was researching them when I was in the market was that the 60 and 75hp versions basically feel identical until you get up into the high revs, where the 60hp admittedly feels a bit flat. There's not much point revving mine above 5000 but it feels surprisingly torquey at lower RPMs, a bit diesel like almost. https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Fiesta ecoboost failure rates are spectacularly high according to a multi dealership owning friend of friend. Actually a very reliable
information source, although I know it doesn't sound like it!
This was due to a coolant hose perishing, splitting and causing overheating. But ford have since issued a recall for affected cars. Will be fine if it’s had the recall. information source, although I know it doesn't sound like it!

The issue is cracking of cylinder head; I would imagine that it's possible to have had the overheating/repair and then cracking at a later stage of ownership. Certainly the 2 or 3 at the dealerships I've heard about (all within a fairly short time) were not repaired under Ford warranty, and would have been dealt with under recall since the dealerships are very experienced, reliable and successful. I'm not describing a comedy scrubland outfit!
Anyway, maybe the chap has gone mental and imagined the entire thing, but I doubt it.

I’ve the Citigroup 60bhp version, and agree the above. They really are fun to drive, plenty of feel and feedback. Low insurance group, 50+mpg, £0 ved for many, cheap to run.
