VW Golf Purchase advice
Discussion
Currently have a VW Scirocco 2.0 Lease (circa £260 a month, fuel and insurance on top) which ends in March.
I have narrowed my next car down to a VW Golf. I am looking for something cheapish and funfor the next 2-3 years whilst I try and save as much money as possible for a house. As above, I am spending roughly 450 a month all in.
I went to my local dealership yesterday and got a PCP quote on a 2016 1.4 TSI Match edition 125 ps with 53,000 on the clock, coming in at £196 a month for 4 years with no deposit and a final optional payment of 4.7k. The cars list price is £11,695.
My knowledge of everything in this area is rather limited but I wish to be paying less than £200 a month and a minimal deposit is favourable. I do around 8000 miles a year.
I am hoping that people will be able to advise as to whether this is a good deal, or whether I should look at leasing again or look at the potential of a bank loan to purchase a second hand golf, be it this one or a similar one from a dealer.
Are there specific models/marks of golf that I should steer towards or away from?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My Golf R wasn't costing much more than that per month with a bank loan, I'd be devastated to spend £200 on a 1.4 match.
You mentioned the word fun and honestly you don't get many cars as dull as a fairly basic Golf. The GTI's and R's however are excellent. Mine was getting 36mpg as well, and I drove it like I stole it everywhere, I would definitely recommend looking in to a fast Golf instead.
None of these seem like the most sensible idea if you only do 8k miles and are trying to save for a house though.

The price is not fantastic. These can be got for around £10K or lessI have narrowed my next car down to a VW Golf. I am looking for something cheapish and funfor the next 2-3 years whilst I try and save as much money as possible for a house. As above, I am spending roughly 450 a month all in.

I'd imagine the APR is scandalous on this - it could be 10.9% APR or 12.6% APR, so please check this.
Assuming you got one of those @ £10K, and borrowed the full amount over 4 years via a cheap loan @ 2.8%, you'd be paying £220 a month. At the end of that term you'd have a car worth maybe £4,000 or so.
If you think of the extra £25 a month as a little savings policy, £4000 after 4 years is quite a return for putting £1,200 in.
You mentioned "fun". I'd imagine there are more fun 5 door cars out there for the money. A 1.4TSI Golf is many things, but fun isnt one of them.
ZX10R NIN will be along with a whole host of other viable options, but if you're wanting to save money, a cheap 3 year loan on an Astra GTC 1.4T would work out less and be more interesting (assuming a 3 door coupe format still works for you)

If it must be a 5 door, heres a year younger Astra new model for the same money

So your real suggestion would be a bank loan of circa 10k and finding a better vehicle thats more fun and likely to hold value etc. Would you suggest going to garages direct (benefits of warranty etc) or private dealers?

I'd definitely go down the bank loan route. Loans are as cheap as chips at the moment. You can borrow £10,000 for four years and only pay a total of £574.40 in interest over the four years.Buying a used car from a "private" seller can be a bit of a minefield as a lot of them are traders masquerading as private sellers. Also you've very little rights when buying a car from a private seller. It should be considerably cheaper but often isnt.
Stick your criteria up on a separate thread and see what options people come up with - ZX10R NIN is brilliant for it.
It might be "2016 or younger, no more than 10K, petrol, 5 door and not too dull" - see what people come back with.
What about buying your Scirocco from the leasing company, is that an option?

Its just a dilemma I keep going round and round, preferring PCP, then lease, then bank loan. The whole process blows my mind
I get that, buying a new car can be quite stressful! I'd definitely recommend a bank loan because you will own the car at the end outright.
Also the new shape 1.4T astra linked to above would be a good shout. If you can find an Elite Nav model they're very well equipped with heated seats and steering wheel, apple car play etc.
It's over £3,000 cheaper than the Golf and no worse to drive, the vauxhall badges put some people off though.
I had a new one back in 2017 and it was the longest I've kept a car in a long time Including the Golf R as it was just such great value for money.

Wanting to save as much as possible for a house whilst pissing £200pm on a car you won't own even after 4 years does not compute.
If you have savings now I'd sooner buy a £2-3k car outright and run it on minimal budget for 3-4 years and put more towards a house.
I agree with this. Getting another lease or loan will affect your borrowing power and completely contradictory to 'saving as much as possible'.If you have savings now I'd sooner buy a £2-3k car outright and run it on minimal budget for 3-4 years and put more towards a house.

I know this is Pistonheads, and a 5 door Astra isn't going to float everyone's boat, but honestly it's been one of the best all round cars to live with that I have owned. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
It's comfortable for any journey, easy to drive and handles a lot better than Astra's of old - pretty much on par with the current Focus which is usually the benchmark for handling in this segment. Interior hard wearing and finished nicely, plenty of kit to keep it interesting, goes alright at 7.8 secs to 60. The 1.6 has 200bhp which would probably be even better. Decent car for the cash!

I drive a boggo spec 1.6 diesel estate and it’s surprisingly alright. Has a reasonable turn of speed.
