Jaguar F-Pace - Petrol or Diesel

Hi all

New to the forum, hoping to get some advice.

Im looking to buy a 2016/17 Jaguar F-Pace but can't decide on Petrol or Diesel.

My situation as follows:

• I average about 6000k miles a year
• I drive mainly around town (greater London) but but once a month do a trip to Manchester.

Now based on milage and mostly town driving, nearly all articles would advise on Petrol for anything less than 10/12k miles per year.

My concern is that for me, a Diesel would actually be cheaper to buy right now compared to petrol (by roughly 4k!), MPG is a lot better and I would take it out on the motorway once a month to clear the DPF. I'm not too concerned about the current views on diesels at the moment as mine would be Euro 6, I'm more interested in what would be best for me.

Are my points valid or am I missing something? Interested to hear your thoughts.

It would have to be the petrol for me with your circumstances. Diesels work best at warm temperature and when doing high miles I reckon. Diesels don't like town work that much so the mpg will nose dive anyway. Petrols also warm up quicker in my experience.

I'd say you need a petrol but if you're prepared to take the car for a run then go for the diesel.

I totally agree with you. If the purchase price of both cars were the same, I would definitely go for the petrol.

My dilemma however is the purchase price.

For example...

A 3 year old F-Pace Diesel i4 2.0 240bhp - £25k
A 3 year old F-Pace Petrol i4 2.0 250bhp - £29k

(Based on current Autotrader sale prices)

Im happy to forgo the fuel economy but to pay an extra 4k for the petrol car as well? Are you saying you would still pay extra for the petrol in this instance?

To me it doesn't make sense to pay considerably more for a car with less fuel economy but very interested to hear an opposing opinion on the above.

@Deerfoot yes for practically the lexus would be the better choice but I prefer the f-pace, even though it's not the most sensible.

London to Manchester once a month is 5k a year out of your total of 6k. Your town driving is negligible. Buy the diesel.

As ZX10R says if you are giving the car a really good run every now and again then the diesel could work for you I think. 4k is a big chunk of difference so I'd be very tempted with the diesel in your position too.

I know you`re not keen on the RX but your budget gets you a `17 plate 305bhp Lexus...

Do you plan on keeping the car until it's scrapped?

If not then you need to look at the cost in terms of what it will lose during your ownership. I would hazard a guess that diesel is only going to get less popular over time and therefor over 3 or 4 years ownership you will lose more money.

My mother in law has a 2l diesel F-pace. It's been perfectly reliable but there's a lot about it that's very average or below. The infotainment system is terrible, the engine is rough, it just doesn't feel very high quality even compared to my wife's new Hyundai Tucson which we both agree also drives better.

Not necessarily. Maybe 3-4 years. Perhaps longer if I really like it, or sooner if i don't.

Yeh I am prepared for some extra depreciation than normal, but then it could only be speculation at this point whereas the 4k price difference is definite. An optimistic view could be that the Euro 6 diesels become more distinguished from older diesels in the eyes of society and this could slow down the diesel depreciation, but yes very optimistic!

Regarding your mother-in-law's f-pace, is it 180bhp or 240? Also what trim level is it?

Dad has a 250 petrol Portfolio, we purchased it new in Dec 2018 as the difference in price between new and used at the time was anywhere between £1000 and £5000 different. The additional benefit was it had the model change revisions, slightly different materials and the in touch pro widscreen.

Portfolio has the slightly softer seats and suspension, it has the glass roof (fixed) which brightens up the inside and it has the lighter roof lining. Build is good and it drives well and is more than quick enough. Its covered 9k and averaged 25mpg.

We did try the 180 diesel before and it was ok but not spectacularly quick. Fit and finish isn't in the same league as an Audi though but the drive is much better

Yeh I've heard similar for the 180. I'm now considering the V6 diesel. The prices are surprisingly similar and the MPG is pretty decent. Plus you get the S trim. I think if you're getting an F-pace, you'd want the sportiness so a 180 doesn't really make sense.

Wow, that's what puts me off with the petrol SUV's. Is that mainly motorway, city or a mix of both?

Its very short trips, like 2-3 miles at a time, it also includes pulling a boat. On a run it will do 40mpg. It replaced a 2.2 auto diesel Freelander and that averaged 29mpg.

If your not towing and its going to live in a city it would be petrol everytime for me.

I've done a more reading and decided to go for the 25t for a variety of reasons.

I would have liked the power of the V6 diesel but the more I read the more I've found it just wouldn't be practical for the type of driving I'd be doing.

we were faced with a similar choice last year WRT diesel or petrol for our GLC250, decided to take petrol because:

- our mileage would make diesel marginal
- possible resale value with diesel being about as popular as jimmy savile

Used diesel sales are as strong as ever, new diesel sales have been affected but this is more to do with BiK changes more than people not wanting a diesel.

That's not the vibe I get.

There are many reasons why people are staying clear of diesels. BIK changes I imagine are in the minority.
