Merc CLC diesels any good?

My girlfriends lad is after a new motor and is keen on a cheap Mercedes diesel as he's heard they're reliable.

Clk he says looks too dated and the older C class also... But likes the look of the CLC as they look a bit newer for less money.

Are they any good?

Yes they're good & reliable, they're basically a slightly shortened C Class the 220 is preferable over the 200 as it's a bit lacking (but could be handy for your lad insurance wise) Sport trim is the pick if you can find one with contrasting interior & the Pano Sunroof then you've hit the sweet spot.

I bought one of these myself last year for a new job with a motorway commute. Mine is the CLC220 CDI in the trim mentioned by ZX10 with pan roof etc.

So far it's been a reliable machine, not had any problems and running nicely. Economy around town isn't great - around 26-28mpg I'm experiencing, but on a longer run 40+ is easily achievable even with a heavy foot.

It has a nice quality feel to the interior, leather seats are comfortable though it can feel a bit of a stiff ride on potholed or bad roads which seem all the more common in recent years.

Tell him to watch out for the speaker covers in the door panels, not sure if it's a design issue or my incompetence but occasionally the seatbelt can get caught by the side of the seat once you get out and when shutting the door is in danger of banging into the covers of the speakers and cracking them.

An easy part to replace, but something to be wary of!
