Apologies if this has been fought over before. New to the forum.

I need a new car. The family can no longer squeeze into my Cooper S, so the old girl has to go. A shame really. Been great fun, and for a BMW Mini, incredibly reliable.

So, from little to large, I'm now looking for an estate, but something that at least looks good.

Am currently split between a Citroen C5 and an X Type. Looking at the 2.0 diesel from either.

Budget will be around £2k. Not huge, so I'd be looking at a relatively high mileage motor.

What are the general opinions here on each car? What's the reliability like? Which one is less likely to be a pain in the arse than the other one?

Any particular problems to look out for? I've been told to check the sills on the Jag, and check the fuel pump, and being a Jag, I guess it's a potential minefield. The fact it's a Mondeo in a prettier dress may make up for some of Jaguar's issues?

Our other car is a C4 Grand Picasso, and has been really reliable in the 5 years we've had it, so I'm aware they can be pretty good.

Over to you.. Thanks for any opinions in advance.

Cheers,

Nick

Not owned either but have researched estates in this bracket before. If you must choose between these two, I'd be looking at the C5. Avoid the Jag at this price point, I have been tempted as they pop up a lot in my Autotrader searches. I've been put off by unreliability and costly repairs.

Worth considering the Mondeo estate and Mazda 6 in my opinion. I have had a 6 for 5 years now and its been great and the Mondeo of this era is particularly well thought of also.

Thanks Cads.

Looked at the Mazda 6, but they're still pricey. And I'm not a fan of the Mk1 shape.

Mondeo? Meh. Bit dull, and they hold their value quite well, so a car in my price range is likely to be a very high mileage one. Not saying no though.

Hear what you say about the Jag. Could be an absolute nightmare.

I’ve looked at a C5. They seemed well equipped and quite rare, but this made finding some decent local examples harder than I wanted.
And as for Jags, I love the idea of wafting about in an old Jag, but the dream and the reality are likely to be poles apart! A mechanic mate said I’d be made to spend 2k on a Jag, with young kids and limited budget for repairs, I stepped away.

The Mondeo is a bit dull, granted, but there are loads about and they seem very well regarded.
It’s the MK1 Mazda 6 I’ve got. I’d replace it in a heartbeat with another.

Good luck in your search.

I looked at both of these a while ago when looking to replace my saab 9-5 Estate.

All the jags were nails at this price plus they are quite small inside.

I kind of liked the citroen but its got quite a few bits of tech and gadgets inside and I just had a feeling they would go wrong like french electrics of old.

In the end I went for a kia ceed estate which hasn't put a foot wrong. It's probably same boot size as the jag but with more passenger space inside. Its a 1.6 crdi with no dpf and a cam chain so very little to go wrong.

It's also up for sale.

The X Type is a Mondeo Estate in disguise but somehow they have a few more issues especially rust wise, I'd probably go for the C5 & I'd be looking for a later MK2 version:

Mondeo

Or it's slightly more challenging looks wise brother the 407

The MK2 Laguna is another car worth looking for:

Petrol Options:

Don't forget the Signum which has a large boot space & is often forgotten:

It's a while since I looked at these. I had a ZT-T and was changing, looked at Mazda 6 v C5 v Mondeo.

The 6 was discounted due to DPF issues. The C5 simply lost out due to the fact I knew what depreciation was like (I was looking at 12-18 months old). Extremely comfortable car to drive.

Mondeo dull? Really? I bought a TitX and it was an excellent car.

In the £2K bracket I'd go for Mondeo or C5, first decent one that came up but if you go C5 then ensure you know a garage that understand them. And then simply wait for the System Depollution Faultyes

It depends largely on what your priorities are, mine was for a car with a good, quiet comfortable ride and for that you cant beat the C5, even the steel sprung version gives a better ride than anything else I have driven for many years.

The best model for reliability is the 2.0. Hdi manual with steel springs, the hydropnumatic version rides even better but can be expensive to repair. I have two, both estates which are very roomy. I paid 1470 pounds for the first one with almost full service history, its a lovely dark metallic red with 104k miles on it and is in really lovely condition. The second one is also a VTR+ but has electric leather, satnav, parking sensors etc, also strangely with 104k miles, I had to got to Peterborough for that one, nearly 200 miles away, they are both 2008 X7 models.

The only known common faults are a leaking steering rack and front wipers and I have had both of those on the first one although the leak is so slow that I just top it up every thousand miles or so and it takes very little, its just past its MOT with the leak. The front wiper motors seem to suffer from water ingress but they are quite easy to remove, I haven't done mine yet as after a recent spell of dry weather they healed up.

The 2.0.Hdi engine is one of the most reliable around and is used an may cars, 1.6 not so good though.

Thanks for the replies everyone, especially ZX10R NIN.

I'm pretty much dismissing the Jag. Too many worries about reliability.

Top of the list is still the C5. V70 also a possibility though, as are some of the Peugeots.

All down to budget I guess. Will see how much I have left when I've flogged and paid off the Mini.

Definitely C5 out of those two. Considerably more modern car (the C5 was introduced the year the X-Type started on run out).

Just check aforementioned steering rack - refurbs can be had now but still a £500 job to fix.

Early 508s also approaching price range which, like the C5, are much underrated and the C5's sister car.

I think the X-Type Estate is an underrated car and should be no less reliable than the equivalent Mondeo. However I think the X-Type saloon lacks any real practicality beyond carrying a parcel shelf straw hat.

The sills do rust, with early ones (pre-2004) allegedly being the worst. Fortunately they are hidden from sight by plastic trim panels unless you look underneath, so repairs don't have to be aesthetically pleasing.

The facelifted post-08 X-type is much improved, and reliability is no worse than any other contemporary car - assuming correct maintenance.

If diesel's your thing, all 2.0Ds and most 2.2D manuals don't have a DPF, and the venerable Ford engine is chain-cam.

You're unlikely to get a 508SW within budget, and most modern estates are 'lifestyle' versions - unlike an old D5 V70!

C5x7 in Exclusive spec (with the HA suspension) all the way every day.

Electrics are fine on them, no worse than any other car.
Steering racks, yes a problem BUT (assisted a friend last year/help by good internet French Car forum) easy to save/solve with a large dollop of marine grease on the pinion shaft accessed via two screws by the pedals.

Comfort !

I considered a C5 estate once, but found that the steeply raked windscreen made heaving my bulbous frame in and out, a bit more of a challenge than was needed.

Never found an issue with the wnidscreen motors. A lot of early ones seemed go wrong due to water ingress but I think most have been fixed by now.

Plenty around with seeping steering racks - if they really go they pour out to the extent Exclusives can end up low on fluid with sunken suspension which can wear out pump.

The X-Type isn't a bad car - just feels a bit dated these days.
