Car under a 1000 - logger

Looking for a cheapish runaround , only do about 4k miles a year. My car has bitten the dust have 3 years of faithful service, only cost me £300 !!

any comments on the I have found..all within 30 miles of me..all have good MOT history

2004 Freelander 1.8 XEi Hard Top 3dr ,120k miles , MOT 20/08/20 - £895

2007 Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia 5dr , 120k miles, MOT 06/12/20 - £995

Focus with a long MoT would be my pick out of those, cheap to fix and should have reasonable kit being a Ghia, too. Assuming it's not due a cambelt or anything. Hard to pick unseen though, condition is everything!

Most people tell mercs rust badly and lexus have brilliant engines but also rust

Lexus don't rust any quicker than other brands. My 05 has minimal rust (few tiny spots that will be sorted next week)

What about an is200/300? They are pretty much indestructible and great to drive.

I did have a look at is200 but couldn't find any on autotrader below £1300 and these were high mileage, cat c etc...

does auto or manual matter for these ?

If you can stretch to the volvo I've got a 59 plate kia ceed estate 1.6 crdi available For that sort of money. 97k with a fair chunk of history.

Based Shropshire so not too far away.

The S40 would be my pick because it's often overlooked but it's the same Chassis/Drivetrain as a Focus so why not buy the lowest mileage car.

I like the s40 but only concern is I have heard its quite heavy and that the 1.8 makes it quite underpowered so mpg suffers..

At 4K miles a year how much does that really matter?

Buy the one in the best condition, with the most evidence of being looked after. It’s a crapshoot at this end of the market.

Of those, on the face of it, the focus then the s40 would be my picks.

General advice of japanese na petrol applies though

Focus first from that list. More practical that the S40 and half the price.

Are there any Honda Civics (the bread van shaped one that spawned the first Type-R) local to you?

What else comes up in an AutoTrader search of NA petrol >= 1.4 | | manual | 5 doors | <£1500 | 30 mile radius near you?
