Right, getting classifieds overload sensation so throwing it out to the seasoned pros. My car history is in my profile to give you an idea of what I've had. The current situation is my Jag Sportbrake is up for sale as I need to replace my wifes knackered old Focus. We are set on a used 2010 ish VW Tiguan R Line TDI for around £7-8k but waiting for decent spec ones to come up. This will leave me with around £10k to buy something for me.

It will be used for commuting to work about 30 miles per day and weekend duties. Plus occiaisonal longer round trips of 120 miles a few times each month for work, but could use the Tiguan for that. We have a 2 yo so need to occaisionally be able to put a car seat in for her.

I'd like to go back to manual is possible but not adverse to auto if it's the right car. Prefer 6 cylinder cars as I find 4 pots a bit dull. A V8 would be nice but the likes of S4 S5s have potential for big bork. I'd like something that's not going to lose too much money when I come to sell. Tend to keep cars 2 years max.

Ideally less than 80k miles, reliability important. I've been looking at:

R32 Golfs again! BMW 335s, E350 mercs, BMW 130i hatch. M sport rather than se's.

What have I missed!

You could always buy my E86 3.0Si Sport Coupe Z4 and have some change if back seats aren't critical!

I've had an e92 325i since our little boy was 1 and although it's not our family car it does have plenty of space for the car seat and a big boot. It's been a very good daily.

You should definitely look at the 335i coupe as I think it'll do pretty much everything you want. Might be better to go for auto with these though. They are quite big and heavy and definitely more GT car than sports car.

Unfortunately I do think the 3 series E9x are still losing money quite quickly so in 2 years you'll take a hit.

Might also be worth looking at the rarer 135i coupe which you can get with a manual box. These could potentially hold their value better imo. And if you can stretch your budget perhaps even the m135i hatch, although these seem to start at 13k.

The c350 coupe might be close to your budget too but again it's an auto.

Thanks all and especially to ZXR10 NIN for the many suggestions. To reflect and narrow down somewhat, I'm not really a fan of Japanese cars so things like Infiniti, skylines aren't for me.

Love the R36 but that particular one looks like I should be selling bags of class A!

Think I'm swaying towards S5 or 335i but the latter has issues with water pump, turbo waste gates and high pressure fuel pump so I'm told, I think there was a recall done for some of those? The silver 335i coupe is particularly nice from the links above.

I like the 6 series but getting on a bit now.

A manual TT 3.2 appeals and I know the engines and platform well from my R32s.

Alfa breras look good, especially that black one but it's a no from Mrs XSI (she will be driving it occaisionally too). The GTAs are lovely but imports, I dont know enough about imports so would need to do some research.

Mr Tidy - Would love a Z4 coupe but not going to cut it on practicality front, think work might raise an eyebrow on the car allowance side of things!

Don’t forget fuel injectors!

The later cars with the n55 engine are a safer bet but yes, they can have expensive issues. The thing is you’re likely to get expensive problems with any powerful, prestige car. It kind of goes with the territory.

Mine is the naturally aspirated n53. If I had done my research before buying the car there’s no way I would have got it. And that would have been a shame because it’s a great car with a fantastic sounding motor.
