£4k budget second car, any suggestions?

Hoping for some inspiration for second car ideas. It's for the wife, who's X plate polo needs to be chopped I'm for something a better.

Will be used for daily commute of 20 miles, and dropping the boy to nursery.

Main requirements:

Petrol
Reliable with no well known expensive issues
Cheapish to run and insure
4 door

Bonus features would be something 'interesting' (nippy, on the rarer side, fun to use a weekend driver occasionally)...

£4k ish budget.

Okay so not particularly interesting or rare but I'd look at a Fiesta titanium 1.6 5 door. You'd get a tidy 10 year old one with low miles for 4k and it suits the other requirements. Cheap to run and fun to drive.

If she's enjoyed the Polo then how about a 2012 Ibiza 1.2fr 5 door? Might need to up the budget a little but they are on auto trader from just over 4k. Nice little car, 60 in 9.8 is nippy in some people's book.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, some great shouts. Do the Alfa's seem to be pretty reliable? To be honest I'd ruled them out in this price range as was always given the impression they werent. Something like that would be perfect I think...

For a cheap and reliable 2nd car I'd be looking at something Japanese like a Suzuki Swift, Nissan Micra\Note, Toyota Yaris\Auris etc

The Alfa's have proven to be very reliable the perception you have is from Alfa's of old, modern ones are on par with anything else out there (the biggest issue is some of the main dealers are terrible) & if you have a good indy they're running costs are sensible.

Could get a ZC32 Suzuki Swift Sport for 4k.
