If you want something effiecient & well spec'd then I'd say look for a diesel hybrid:

If you want a diesel, then there's a lot of choice - for petrol, less so.
I actually have a CT200h (mentioned above) at the moment and it's a pretty decent, non-sporty boring car. Do make sure you read the owner reviews rather than the press ones, generally written without knowledge of how to drive a hybrid. I can't imagine that fuel economy would be hugely important at a £20k budget, but for what it's worth my CT's economy never dips below 50mpg.

Go S Class! A little high miles for current shape but with some negotiating you should be able to get one sub 20 with sub 100k
