Merc C Class 1.8 C180 Kompressor SE 2dr - Thoughts ?
Discussion
I've seen a really nice 2007 C Class 1.8 C180 Kompressor SE 2dr with only 43k miles, 11 months MOT ( with no advisories ), only 2 owners..she is asking £2495
What does everyone think. I only do about 4k miles a year and usually short trips with just the occasional 100miler
Will it do me as a reliable car for the next 2-3 years ?
Or are there problems with this car
cheers

I’ve had one as a second car for 10 years. All it’s needed are consumables. What does everyone think. I only do about 4k miles a year and usually short trips with just the occasional 100miler

A perfectly sensible, adequate, and respectable car. Safe.
Mechanics are simple.
Expect 30 to 40 mpg.
It will keep up with motorway traffic perfectly adequately.
I’ve every intention of keeping mine for another 10.
If it’s in nice nick it’ll be worth what you want to pay for it.
I’d use it as a bargaining tool, but if it’s the car for you be careful not to lose it for a few hundred quid.
Valuations are a bit academic in this league. My car is worth £6grand to me (to replace it) but only £2grand to jo bloggs.
You can always get the AA to check it’s not rusted. But mine is solid and gets serviced at a main dealer.

A quick search on AT brought up this

They’re pretty decent really. Bigger boot than a Golf or A4.
Don’t be dissuaded by the book 0-60 times, they will shift when necessary. Being supercharged it’s linear and easy to judge delivery.
Good luck.

Thanks..
I'll take a look at them
She has just replied so still available.. My only concern now is that she said it is the company's pool car.. Not sure whether that is good or bad?
Ah. As long as it’s been serviced, it should be ok, but some wouldn’t. I means that it will have been ragged a bit, but they are not really the kind of car that is likely to have been ragged. It’s not a white van. I'll take a look at them

Would payment be to the the company then? Is it her company?
As noted above there are plenty others. But if it’s sound, it still looks like a good buy.

Looks clean tidy and has the proper mats, I always take that as a good sign it has been looked after.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...

Have you got the registration number so you can check the MOT history?

Nothing too scary there, usual tyres, wiper blades, headlight aim and a suspension arm ball joint failure in 2018 at 34k miles.Only thing I find strange is an advisory for the first MOT in 2009 at 10k miles for "Front upper steering column top bearing slightly worn". Seems a weird thing to happen on such a new and low mileage car.

As with all things, it depends. If you're doing lots of cold-start urban crawling and never getting out of the bottom few gears - which is what it sounds like from your opening post - then you might not even get 25mpg. But if the engine's getting warm and you're moving at a reasonable pace then you'll do better.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...

All that said, if you only do 4000 miles a year the difference between 25mpg and 30mpg is only around £200. Not really worth worrying about in the overall cost of running the car.

Thats true
....thats where its heart vs head..
As a carer doing 4k miles , I wonder how buying the C180 in terms of petrol / tax costs per year and resale cost in a few years ( depending on what our government does ...) compares to the standard 1.8 Zebec Ford focus !
I'l have to do some calculating

I definitely wouldn’t worry about mpg for 4000pa.

There are quite a few very low mileage 1.8+ Focus’s for sale for a similar price.....thats where its heart vs head..

Both look like good value for decent A to B cars.
Obviously a Focus will be cheaper for servicing.
