Fuel efficient smallish car low tax with cruise control

I am looking at getting something like a Yaris 1.3 petrol as a second car for using around town but also would be superb if I could comfortably use it on the occasional long distance (80 miles plus) run.
I don't do many miles under 10k a year but want to spread the miles onto a runaround, rather than the Z4.
Since having an E39 540i manual I have gone the other way, for cars that are light-weight and fun! Many years ago I had a Saxo VTR (42mpg max. but awful offset seating to pedals posn)
Also swaying towards petrol as I don't do the miles, unless it's low maintenance i.e. doesn't have a DPF.
With a budget of £1-1.5k I noticed that the yaris ticks the boxes, however doesn't have cruise control... not a deal-breaker but wondering if there is something similar I can get.
Then I get tempted to get a 15 year old Cooper S but assuming the mpg is probably on par with the Z4... decisions.
I don't mind spending a bit more on a newer car for comfort / efficiency and lower tax.
In summary I've got a Z4 for grin factor, and want to put the miles onto a small car with 4 seats that brings out the hypermiler in me when times allow.

If like you say you'd be willing to up your budget, you could consider an Auris 1.33 which had optional CC but very easy to retrofit or even a 0.9 Clio TCE 90 which has CC as standard. The former being the cheaper of the two, latter available from £3K
