Mitsubishi Outlander, or alternatives...?

I’m looking to change the daily driver.
In a nutshell, budget of ~£5k. Needs 7 seats (wel technically 6 but you get the idea) diesel, minimum 40mpg, manual.
I’ve currently got a Volvo V70 D5 AWD with the boot seat conversation. If I’m honest, it does everything I need. It’s relatively frugal, it’s big, it’s got AWD, and it’s adequately nippy when I want it to be. However, it’s got 175k on the clocks and it’s throwing bills on a very regular basis now, so I think it’s time to look for a change.
I do like the estate 7 seat thing, but obviously they’re a dying thing having not been made for about a decade.
I simply cannot, and will not buy an MPV. I spend 70% of my time in the car alone, and I just can’t spend that time in an S-Max or similar. They may well be the best in segment, but I just can’t do it.
Factor in the OH doesn’t like driving the Volvo because of its tanker like dimensions, so I’m led (back)to the SUV market.
Historically I have had an XC90 which was brilliant, but it averaged 26/27mpg which on my mileage was crippling. My experience with this big 4x4 rules out all the big ones like the Disco, Shogun etc.
I chopped that in for the newer generation of X-Trail. The 1.6dci in that managed to achieve both glacial performance and rubbish MPG. Also the media interface was the most frustrating thing I think I’ve ever come across in a car. So that went in favour of the current V70 and some cash in my pocket.
So, the MK2 Outlander has popped up on my radar (think 2009-2013) Fairly handsome (subjective), allegedly the later 2.2 Mitsubishi engine is a peach (the earlier 2.2 PSA unit, not so much) it has selectable AWD, 7 seats. And they seem to be pretty good value for money, freely available, and ones in decent spec seem more common than poverty spec.
So firstly, any experiences of the Outlander would be appreciated.
Secondly, any alternatives? SUVs with 7 seats that aren’t horrific to run.

Had a look at the Pug and the Citroen, the looks don’t do it for me but I won’t rule them out.
The Santa Fe is a good shout, they have good stats and seem well equipped. On the list.
I just don’t want an MPV. With the ex we had a Touran. And as competent as it was, I just don’t want one as a daily.
The V70 - turbo charge pipe, front shocks, hid self levelling issues, 2 callipers, exhaust, tyre wear issues, and that’s in the last 6 months.
