is a very low mileage 2.5 x-type worth a look ?

I only do 4k miles year, spotted a 54 plate 2.5 AWD X-Type, VGC , only 38k Miles !.. no advisories...

asking £1500 ?

worth having for 12 -24 months or will its value drop like a stone !.. and reliability ??

a £1,500 15 year old car is a shed, it's lost pretty much all the value its going to lose, you could bang another 50k miles on it in 2 years, if it's still is as good shape with a years MOT it will still be worth most of what you paid for it

If you are immune to the image then these are actually a really good drive. Auto box is an old style dim witted one and it will be thirsty but the engine is pleasant enough and they handle well ( much better than an A4 quattro of a similar era )

Thanks.. I really wasn't looking at an x-type.. more at focus, s40 etc but at under £2k they were all either very high milers , dodgy MOT history or rust whereas this is totally immaculate and one owner from new

I know its a bit of an old mans car ( or am I wrong ) but I just need a totally reliable car for 12-18 months

I guess I'm just being a wimp and thinking what the government might do over the next 18months with bigger engine cars..ie it wont be worth anything !

A mate of mine has never spent more than £1500 on a car for as long as I've known him. Spends very little on them other than possibly a quick service and an MOT. Runs them for 12-18 months and gets rid. More often than not sells them for the same price he paid for them, sometimes more.

I don't think there's much plummeting to do value wise.

Nothing can be guaranteed to be totally reliable, however one of these shouldn't be any more risky than anything else of that age.

The value of a functional car can only drop so low, but the future value (and saleability) of a car like this will depend more on its condition at the time of sale rather than anything else.

I reckon it is more likely that in the short term (5yrs) there will be a demand for cheap petrol engined medium sized cars from people living in cities that are clamping down on diesels.

How much is the value in 2 years a consideration?

I would count on it being worth scrap value and anything else is a bonus. Put the details into wbac and autotrader recommended price to see how much you would get if you were trying to get rid of it now. I bet it doesn’t come back as £1500.

Having owned an x type I wouldn’t consider it a reliable choice. The heaters go very easily so check that, the bonnet catches fail easily (that’s now an mot fail) look under the rubber window seals as these rust and hide bad damage, window electrics go very easily. If it’s an auto had it had the fluid changed? They are sealed units but need doing every 10 years I think.

I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole again, but any car of that age is a risk. For £1500 there are plenty of other things I would put my faith in.

Despite what anyone says in the right trim and spec these cars feel special. If you really want one I would search out a local jag specialist and see if they have any for sale.

You must be joking. They're great cars but a boxer engine with 238k miles on it will be anything but reliable

I don’t have experience with the 2.5 but the 3.0 is bombproof and sounds great, 100k miles on them and they are only getting worn in the 3.0 is chain driven not with a belt like the 2.5. If this has a decent service history, I would trust it more than many other marques costing double tbh. The AWD Jag looks a nice ride and seems fairly keenly priced however, if things do go wrong the car won’t be very cheap anymore.
