Pre registered car tax - first year rate or second year rate

Has anyone recently bought a pre-registered car ? I am thinking of buying one but i wondered what to expect with the tax - as it has relatively high emissions the first year is quite an eyewatering amount!

I bought a pre-registered car two years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find I had to pay the second years tax rate.

The initial large tax amount is only when the car is first registered by the dealer.
