My dad is after a 'new' car, however, he's unsure on what.

He's after:

- An estate
- Diesel
- Auto
- 16 plate onwards
- Enough power to pull a caravan
- No more than £18k

He's keen on Octavias and Superbs but is unsure what else to look at in his budget. He's also curious as to what is alright mileage to buy a diesel of this age on?

Cheers

Think he's a bit sceptical on mileage. What's a decent mileage for a diesel? Think he is a bit scared of plummeting money into a high miler and it going bang.

There are good reasons why an E class 220cdi is model of choice for taxi drivers.

Mondeo is still an excellent all round car and fits all those parameters, often forgot about now as everyone wants a "premium" badged car on their drive.

Mine’s on 210k and just keeps on running. Boring, but well-made and very easy to live with. It wears high miles much better than any other car I’ve owned.

I'll mention Mondeo to him. He's not fussed about brand, far from materialistic.

I'm currently looking for a car with very similar requirements to the OP and keep coming across the F11 530D. Seems like quite a lot of car for the money

I'd say the weight of the caravan he's going to be pulling is a larger factor to the longevity of the engine than any anecdotal comments on 'safe milage'. Most cars are inherently reliable these days.

For 18k your dad can have the world when it comes to a 2016 onward estate, my first pick is a Mondeo Vignale they're the best FWD steer & in Vignale (Ivory lifts the interior) trim they're a (I'd try to find a 210) very nice place to be:

CLS220d now with the cars weight & a Caravan I'd sugest getting it remapped

Insignia Elite Nav 170 lots of space but may be lacking in grunt for towing.

C250 AMG Line Premium Plus 200 Fully loaded your dad may well be swayed by this one

Superb Sportline 190 I'd only look at one of these if boot space was a big factor

In all honesty I'd be trying to get my dad into a 3.0d they may cost a bit more on initial purchase price but a 6 pot diesel is the way to go imo:
