Car Conundrum

I've had my 2.2 '58 Civic for the longest I've ever had a car - bought in April '13 with 20k on the clock. Now turned 90k and nearly 7 years with us. Before this I think the longest I had a car was 3 years!

My wife's cars have been a bit more varied. 9-5 Aero, Mazda5, another Civic, Terracan, Gen 2 CR-V and now a '10 Gen 3 CR-V 2.2 - the car she had hankered for for a few years.

Now had the V for 2 years. Great car for the family and the dog and the pull to pull our old caravan. However in the last 6 months her job has changed, she works literally a mile down the road and the Caravan is now gone. Walking to work isnt an option as she has to drop the kids at the childminder before work. As a result the V threw up a DPF fault last month as it never gets a chance to properly warm up. Since its had a forced regen there is a smell of fumes in the car when sitting in traffic or on start up. Seems it's a weakness in diesel V's and prob needs a new egr pipe. Car due in to the garage for this next week.

Wife will not use my car - she doesnt like it.

What should I do? Can't continue to use the V on short runs - we'll get another DPF blockage at some point. My car at best only worth 1.5k and quite fancied shedding it. She indoors doesnt want me to get rid of the V and wants me to run it to work but wont run mine. Don't have a great deal of £ to put into a car at the moment unless I take a loan and I dont really want to do that.

Thoughts?

Tell her to do one?

Perhaps you can use her car one day a week to give it the proper run it needs?

The reality is that one of your diesels has to go if you're car is running fine then keep that & part exchange your diesel CR-V for a Petrol one like something below:

That way your wife has the same car but now with a drivetrain that suits her new circumstances.

Thought of that. Dealers are in business to make money though - I'd want like for like and hers is a facelifted EX with 81k on the clock. - those two are older and pre facelift. Means I'd have to put cash with the trade for the same car. Two years ago before diesel was demonized the Petrol versions were much cheaper than the diesel!

You'd have to put some money towards whatever you change to because the trade in value will always be less than the car you're buying.

An EX in petrol with less than 80k (72k) are on sale from 6.3k the cheapest diesel version with 74k starts at 5.8k so not a massive difference. The petrol version will be more expensive due tp there being less for sale versus the diesel plus things like the ULEZ have helped firm up the prices of the petrol cars.

Thanks for the advice ZX10R NIN. Just had a good conversation with my trouble and strife. I want to keep the V as we may get another caravan this year and, of not, will definitely be borrowing a family members van so want the diesel to tow.

Will be sorry to see it go but, if it has to I will move on the Civic. Idea now is to pick up a petrol car for her pottering about the town. Found a car that seems to fit her bill - airy, sits up a bit higher etc..... Another Gen 2 CR-V. Found a late model VTEC Executive with low miles for 2k. MOT history is very clean. As ever it's not her compromising hahaha

that's it you put your foot down lol, I'm lucky my OH is into cars too so we save the me compromising on things to do with the house!
