Most ECONOMICAL estate for around £2k

Apologies if there are already threads covering this!

I'm looking for an estate car between 1k and 2k - need this body type as have 2 big dogs. What I need to know is what is the cheapest to run at this price?

Currently have a Peugeot 3008 which has too small a boot and seems to be a bit of a guzzler even tho it's only a 1.6l

Might get a mkIV Mondeo 2.0Tdci for the top end of budget. Definitely a mark 3.

Honda Accord estate. Choice of 2.2tdci or 2.0/2.4 petrol.

At this price point a good example of what you can find is probably better than targeting a specific model. Also, good MPG + big estate + £1k to £2k can only mean old diesel and at this age there is reasonable likelihood of a large bill, which would more than offset worse mpg of a normally aspirated petrol engine.

Vectra 1.8i petrol estate might be biggest and being petrol and NA could be low risk.

Check ULEZ on old diesels if you live in London.

Looks like Insignia estates are coming down into top budget. Tthe earlier, squarer and more dog friendly Vectra is low end of budget.

You could chance your arm with an older 1.9pdi engined Audi A6.

You describe your current car as a guzzler even though it’s only a 1.6. Is that a diesel?
The reason I ask is I’m curious about what your usage profile is. If you use a diesel constantly around town for short urban journeys it will indeed guzzle. That said, I had a X Trail not that long ago with the 1.6 Renault unit in it, and even though I used it like a diesel should be used, the mpg was very underwhelming for what it should have been.
Depending on your use, you may find petrol is actually the sensible choice. And you’ll get more car for your money
