Why do you want rid of the Civic? I cant imagine the other cars will be much cheaper to run that it? Especially when you add in the reliability of the FN2

You'll struggle to find anything more reliable tbh, FN2 civics are pretty bombproof

I went from an FN2 to a mk7 fez ST. Cheaper tax, cheaper petrol, faster car (mountuned) and slightly less harsh suspension. Heated seats and quick clear windscreen and surprisingly roomy for a small car. Other than the boot not much difference space wise than an the FN2. Fits your budget too.

I presume when you say slightly better you are referring to on paper performance stats? The 2.0 turbo in the Scirocco has significantly more mid range performance which you'd use on a daily basis and can offer a more relaxed driving style . The interior all be it somewhat conventional compared to the spaceship style Civic is a worthwhile improvement. Service parts and maintenance is likely to be more or less the same as your Civic.

Maybe a misnomer but i've joined in scirocco groups, forums and it seems apparent the 160 BHP 1.4 is a complete no go as there seems to be something up with the pistons causing the engines to fail. There is the 122 BHP variant which I am looking for but those are few and far between in white.

The 2.0 TSI, insurance wise i think will be the same as my type R or a bit less maybe. W.R.T fuel i meant it wouldn't be a massive improvement would it?

Basically I just want to drive like a granny in a nice looking hatch. Mind I have always had Hondas, and never had a VW so not sure what I'm getting myself into. But I can't find anything other than the scirocco that I like so it seems I might have to stretch my budget to a facelift (which would be silly as I'm not in a ideal position to be putting £10k+ cash on a car).

A 10-15 year old corolla/civic is a very attractive car if you want cheap/reliable/easy to fix/happy to park it in supermarket car parks.

Running a cheap stter makes saving a lot easier too, so you can get something nice to keep in the garage a lot sooner than if your daily is newer/posher

I'm in a similar position, I think the value of the fn2 is hard to beat, which is why I bought mine.

23/24mpg seems pretty poor, I get 30mpg in the city when using 5 & 6 gears. Might be time to clean the air flower sensor inside the airbox. I had 23 mpg before I cleaned mine, average 29 in the winter months.


I only really found 2 cars,

Sirocco 2.0 TSI, this can probably do 35/40mpg,
Tax ranges from £145 a year to £235 depending if it's blue motion or not
180 to 207hp, remaps to around 250
Handles well and is actually fun to drive
Limited inside space so it's less practical than the fn2



Alfa Giulietta 1750 turbo,
30mpg I have heard so not great but remap to around 270hp
tax £145 to £260 depends on the year


The sirocco like said isn't a huge leap ahead of the fn2 on paper but Honda quoted 6.4s to 60 but most people get around 6.7 to 7s.
VW quoted 6.9s to 60 for the Sirocco 2.0 (207hp) but from what I have seen it's quite a lot faster than that, I have seen reviewers, proper car mags claiming they were getting very very low 6s.
DSG gearboxs are meant be to pretty reliable on the later models (after 2008 i think) which would be something that could warrant the upgrade from the fn2.
I love my FN2 but I don't like all the idiots sitting on my rear bumper expecting me to race them in their works diesel van or the fact that to have some fun you will see low 20 mpg, the vw will probably do 30mpg whilst having a spirited ride.


If you're not bothered about diesels then c180 or c220 is probably within your price range. 40+ mpg and tax is £130 a year but will probably lose out on depreciation.

Surely best to save your 6/7k and buy something much cheaper. It doesn't have to be a shed.

Suzuki swift sport was a good shout above, otherwise Clio 1*2 are cheap and popular.

Or embrace your priorities and go full cheap, switch to a non-dpf diesel and save every penny as fast as you can. Might be a dive but hopefully a short term one.
