How do these cars drive and how reliable are they, they seem to get amazing MPG. After a small auto for my wife, was looking at a Jazz but these Smart cars seem decent.

Look at a Suzuki Splash auto, neat little thing ,cheap to run and reliable. Cheap servicing & repairs.

That generation of Forfour is mechanically the same as Mitsubishi colt so you may find more info on ownership by looking for feedback on those.

My brother is on his third, or rather he's had two and currently has a Mitsubishi colt which the 4four is based on. The Mitsubishi version is just as good but seems to be a bit cheaper on the second hand market.
He took the first two to 150000 + miles and the only major problem was a dodgy electronic gear changer on the first (it's actually a normal manual box with an added automatic changer rather than a full automatic box) which he replaced with one from a scrappy.
The current one is only on 120000 miles but still going strong.
His have all been 1.5 diesels, getting 70+mpg.
He swears by them.
