It is time to replace my trusty old Y plate A8 4.2 V8 purchased off ebay in May 2010 on 61K miles with something a little newer/more frugal.
I have put 104K miles on it with no breakdowns and a couple of trips to the South of France, so it has served me well, however shrinking the fleet from 3 to 2 means I need something for everyday use that averages more than the 26 mpg the Audi manages (and it is used only for longer trips, so would drop a fair bit with town use). I have put £400 of petrol in it over the past 4 weeks which is not viable longer term !

My wishlist :
- 4 or 5 doors (so elderly relatives can get in)
- Auto (never had auto before the A8 but have grown to love it for sitting in motorway traffic jams)...got a manual Audi TT for country lane drives
- Comfy/quiet (the A8 is great for this and i know the replacement will not likely match it)
- Up to 80K miles
- Cruise control
- Petrol/Diesel/LPG - not fussed

Was thinking maybe an Octavia, Mondeo, Insignia, though Accords look worth a look having read a few Readers Cars threads on here. Any thoughts please ?

I had a D2 A8. Loved it, had it for years from almost new, and drove it into the ground.

My tip: get an L322 V8 diesel Range Rover. The seats won’t be quite as supportive, it won’t be quite as chuckable, but it’s a good replacement nonetheless.

I love my D2 2.8 fwd. Very comfy on the motorway - where it's 36-38 mpg on a run at 70mph.
Not a lot can replace it but if fuel is a concern how about a Lexus GS430h?

RR is too big really as happy to go down 1 or 2 sizes from the A8.
Not sure the Lexus would do much more mpg than the A8 would it ? Combined looks to be about 23mpg, though a lot of car for the money

Not thought about an Octavia so that's a good shout. Think I am going to downsize a bit though and never scratched the Volvo or Saab itch so I will do some searching on those and see what comes up
