Hi guys

Which is the ideal vehicle or ones to avoid to tow a 4 berth caravan without blowing the bank balance?

Cheers

It needs to be some sort of SUV, diseasals are better as they are more torquey but check the MLTP on any vehicle you like the look of.
Discovery's are good, the new Touareg is very highly rated also.

Errrrr....

To just need to do some research on weight of van vs towcar weight capacity.

In the spirit of recommending what you have, any V70 D3/4/5 would be ace.

Transit pickup, handy for carrying large propane bottles as well.

FFS. You see this sort of crap all over caravan forums. I expect better from a PH member.

The answer is it depends.

It depends on how heavy the caravan is. Loaded that is.
It depends on your driving license - many youngsters are limited as to what they can tow - and a heavier car means that they can actually tow less.
It depends on what car you want.
It depends on how much cash you want to spend.

Pick a car you like and compare it with your caravan. This site will tell you if it’s a good match.

just as a side not if your lucky enough to be younger ( think its if you passed your normal car test after 1997) then youll need a towing licence to tow a certain size caravan.

So, we need more information.

Max weight of caravan, budget, general use while not towing, how many it needs to seat?

I owned a van for 15 years and used various towcars to tow it.

Our caravan had a max weight of 1410kg.

We towed with the following:

V70 2.5 10v - excellent car all round but thirsty especially when towing. Lacked a little torque but still towed well.
Mondeo 2.0 Zetec petrol - felt underpowered but same power as the V70, just didn't get on with it generally
Alhambra TDi - surprisingly excellent tow car with short overhang and gutsy PD engine. Loads of room for my 3 kids inside.
XC90 D5 - Superb tow car but thirsty as you would expect. Reliable, spacious but dated especially gearbox.
Avensis 2.0 diesel - Very reliable, well equipped, good towcar but missed the space in the XC90
XC90 D5 - as above :-)
V60 D3 - planned on selling the caravan and with kids growing up (eldest off to uni) we decided we didn't need a big car. I towed with it a few times before selling the van and it was ok. Similar to the Avensis. Never let us down. Now on 140k miles.

If we still had the van I was planning on an XC60 D5 next.
