Trading In - how's it work?
Discussion
New territory for me- decades since the last time I traded in, rather than sold privately...
Outgoing vehicle is a slightly tatty XC90, coming up to 200k, 6 months left on the ticket- if I'm looking for something to replace it with at the cheaper (<5k) end of the market, how will the dealer assess it's trade in value- will even he bother to look at it, will he give a nominal amount off the replacements sticker price or what? I'm assuming the car would go to auction, btw.

Book auction value less a bit. At that mileage, condition etc, it won't be much.
Look on WBAC for a rough idea, you might even get more selling to them and paying cash for the new one. Remember no matter what the WBAC valuation is online, they can always change the offer having seen the car.

Unfortunately at that mileage a dealer is really not going to have much interest, expect them to offer you a few hundred pounds as a token gesture for it.
You would be better placed to either take your chances on ebay with an auction with low start price and you may get lucky or stick in on something like Gumtree if you have a rough value in mind. These methods obviously take away the convenience of simply leaving it with a dealer and driving away your new purchase but you will probably get more for it

Agree with this - you'll almost certainly be able to make more by selling it on Autotrader, Gumtree etc if you can be bothered. I'd put it through an MOT so you can sell with 12 months ticket, polish the hell out of it, and be prepared for tyre kickers. The difference between this approach and the trade-in may well be £1k so it's worth doingYou would be better placed to either take your chances on ebay with an auction with low start price and you may get lucky or stick in on something like Gumtree if you have a rough value in mind. Friendly(ish) dealer here
Sounds a lot like a 500 quid car. Dependent on the outfit you're at most will either know a trader/dealer who handles cheapies or if they've an auction policy will want it on the books at whatever its CAP average/below figure is. At that end of the market if the car drives OK and has a decent MOT that's as much as matters.
If you've the time to get it properly cleaned a good ad on ebay might double that amount.
