Im in the market for a 7 seater to use at the weekends when the Mrs and all the kids (7-17) are around. Seems daft to go for something new that will only be used by just me in the week (plus I have and RS6 to play in). Any sensible suggestions (i.e no Zafiras) as to what should go in the garage?

Budget?

Personally I would go for either S Max, Galaxy (if you want a little more room) or Ahambra.

Or XC90/Disco if you can justify additional running costs.

I personally think if your not fussed about the styling and you want practicality a Ford Galaxy is the way to go.
They are not a bad drive at all, generally very reliable and hugely practical, you basically have a decent size van and people carrier in one.

Just exchanged the 7 seat Zafira Tourer. Fantastic car. We weren’t using to it’s potential hence changing. It had become my commuter was wasn’t great when I’m doing 300 miles a week and was getting around 45mpg

Good driving position, the rearmost seats were easy to get into at 5’10”.
Had the 2.0sri Cdti. Lots of power for 7 adults and ample interior space. We could get a standard double mattress and virtually anything from ikea in it.

Nissan Elgrand or Toyota Alphard. Both 3.5 V6 with tons of room, so you can get everyone where they need to go, and quite quickly.

Jeez I didint know they even existed. They'd fit in well with the kids Anime phase at the mo, but I couldnt go that leftfield myself!

I wouldn't call a 7 seater MPV even remotely leftfield but each to their own!

A 2000, red VW sharan 1.9tdi auto has cropped up on autotrader, 32k miles. Auto box. Looks like family owned for all/most it’s life. Looks mint. Asking £2195. With light usage you won’t lose any money.

I may be wrong but are they not six seats? I thought the middle row was two captains chairs but I have only ever looked at the AMG version with any interest.

There were 5, 6, and 7 seat options.

I've just thought of another one... the Merc Viano) now V-class). Although I'm happy with my GL (7-seater), I would consider a low mileage Viano with the 3-litre diesel when the time comes to replace the GL.

They're no more leftfield than a Vaneo & imo a better choice especially when you take into account spec & price.

Or the more mainstream option would be a Mercedes GL:
