I'm test driving a used Mazda 6 today, and the dealer has asked to bring both the drivers licence and the National Insurance number. I inquired about the need for NI number for a test drive and was told that it was their standard practice. I have never been asked for NI number in any of the test drives I have done so far. Is it really standard practice? Has anyone else been asked for NI number for a test drive?

I’m not sure I’d agree to that but them I’m very particular about my personal information having had 2 attempted identity thefts.

Presumably it's to get licence endorsement details from the DVLA. I've been asked to bring the access code in, but some dealers seem to prefer to look it up themselves.

Yep, that is what it will be for.

Very normal I have been asked many times, see link to generate the code yourself and view licence info.

Dealer can have a DVLA access code from me to check my license, but no way they’d get my Ni number. Risks just too great. Plenty other cars and dealers out there!

I've test driven about 15 cars from dealers in the past 10 years and never been asked for my NI number. There's obviously no need for them to have it.

Since the paper counter part of your licence was abolished their is no other way to check if your legally able to drive the car you want to test drive, The same thing is asked if you want to hire a vehicle! I don't see the problem

At least 15 in the last 10 years or so..just because someone is new to the forum doesn't mean they are new to owning a car as well..

Anyway, went ahead with the test drive this morning. They needed the NI number to get that code from DVLA which then lets you print a driver history record. Apparently they wouldn't let someone test drive if they had more than 10 points..
