MK6 golf advisories
Discussion
Looking at a SH 09 plate golf.
Mileage pretty nifty for its age, and its a lowish price at the moment.
Looking at MOT history it has had a LOT of report items on the car for such low mileage against age.
Weird ones are;
Nearside Front Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (8.2.2) as a FAIL.
Tyres are constantly low/frayed, maybe a result of where its driven based on postcode.
Then the issue I think will deter me here;
Offside Rear Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))
What do ya think of these above?

It's a 10 year old car low mileage or not and I would consider all the advisories to be perfectly normal for a car of it's age, the shock absorber could have had a hard life being bounced over speed bumps at speed regularly.
The wiper again for a 10 year old car I'd say that's normal, funnily enough I replaced the wipers for possibly the first time a couple of weeks ago on my 9 year old Volvo, half price at Euro carparts.
Tyres again they will wear out.

Thanks for input. I'm no fool to think buying a car with that age will have the odd issue....something about this one so I'm giving it a miss.
I have actually found one that has just had a brake disc advisory for its age....and has done less mileage and Its done about 3k-5k miles a year with the previous owner.

Worst case is it needs a wiper blade, tyres and shock absorbers. All these are consumables, so as long as the price reflects the cost to replace these then it would not worry me.
This. Its an 11 year old car. You need some perspective here.
If you want a new car then buy a brand newone.
Old car in needing repairs shocker!
You’re trying to judge a car based on its MOT history alone when as you’ll know there are far better ways to ascertain whether it’s a “good” one or not.
The one with a note for brake discs could mean the driver was oblivious to the state of their brakes but got lucky with everything else?
Wipers - probably the blades
Tyres - have they been replaced since that note?
Shocks - probably to be expected, even more so if it lives somewhere urban?

Before you go thinking im some naive idiot it did need the wiper sorted at its first MOT!Its an 11 year old car. You need some perspective here.

How on earth is that any sort of an issue?
To say you are looking for problems and making a mountain out of a molehill is an understatement!
Year after year of corrosion related fails/advisories is a major cause of concern. Fails/advisories for consumables is not.
Well this post escalated....are a lot of traders here self isolating and bored?
I wasn't bothered by wipers going...I was merely interested why...I've currently got an older model of golf and its never had wiper issues.
Wtf else will tell you about a car and its mechanical history? If a cars had reasons to not be roadworthy then surely its a pretty good source of history to see why?

There is nothing unreasonable on the mot history, it’s a common thing with Audi’s and vw’s to have leaking shock absorbers, they start off misting and then usually need replacing within 18months. It would not stop me buying a car (the vw badge would though ...) but budget for replacing them.
I would be more concerned about vw’s software fix and if the car has had it then I wouldn’t buy it.

Yeh have had a shock replaced on the existing golf but after 130k miles so it was a bit surprising to see it on this one. I would be more concerned about vw’s software fix and if the car has had it then I wouldn’t buy it.
What SW fix do you mean? It had a recall notice on the MOT history, so phoned up VW and it was for the ABS.

You were bothered by the wipers, otherwise why mention it?. They a are a simple consumable. I wasn't bothered by wipers going...I was merely interested why...I've currently got an older model of golf and its never had wiper issues.

A failed/smearing wiper blade (its down to the subjectivity of the tester on the day don't forget) is a complete non issue.
My car has an advisory for worn rear discs a couple of years ago but so what? The discs have since been replaced. The condition of the car on the day you inspect it with a view to purchasing it is much more important than advisories from years ago.
The only exception in my opinion is corrosion, in the this scenario mot history can be a valuable tool to monitor its past.

TBH @Stevemcs This is a 1.4TSI's which I thought were going to be a better option than Diesel but I think I'm wrong after doing a bit of research.
Timing belts are a bit risky from researching so will seek to find a diesel.
The timing chain can stretch and the tensioner can fail on some of the petrol models. Timing belts are a bit risky from researching so will seek to find a diesel.
It's a timing belt on the diesel and as far as I'm aware there are no issues with it as long as the recommendex change intervals are adhered to.
