Hi All,

I'm looking for some thoughts on a practical two car garage with a total of c. £25K to spend.

We currently have company cars - a new Jaguar XFS Sportbrake and a new Jaguar E-Pace - but potentially owning two reliable used cars looks like good overall value for the future.

Car 1: Sad and horrible SUV
- Requirements: Mid sized family SUV, £12K-£13K, 2017ish or newer, <40K miles, automatic, petrol, parking sensors, bluetooth, <140g/km
- Options: Nissan Quashqai, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscon, Nissan X-trail?

Car 2: Hatchback - boring or fun-ish?
- Requirements: Hatchback / Estate, £12-£13K, <40K miles, 5 door, manual or auto (depending on what suits the car), petrol or diesel, <140g/km
- 2013 Golf GTI - just over budget and unfortunately not the performance pack
- 2014 Golf GTD - it's a diesel, like the GTI just worse
- 2015 120d (facelift) - it's a diesel, but great all-round package
- 2015 320d Saloon (facelift) - OK, it isn't a Hatchback but a lot of car for the money
- 2017/18 Golf SE (facelift, 1.4 TSI 125) - efficient, looks fine, low miles / new for the money, does the job, incredibly boring, will struggle to go up hills, feels like giving up on cars for life, my XFS felt like a Chiron after test driving one
- Anything actually interesting I might want is ruled out either on price or doors or g/km (Leon 280, RS Megane, M135i, 340i / 330d / 335d (F20), Civic Type R (FK2), GT86)

What am I missing?!

Both your choices seem really boring.
Fair enough with the first one, but buy an older 3 litre or bigger/ faster, anything German, for the second car.
They really are pretty reliable even with a few miles on.
In all honesty, I wish I had years ago. An extra £10 a week to run.
Your only here once !

Just saw that you have a 330i
You dont need any help with a car choice, just some cuddles.
Give yourself a slap Man !

Haha - you aren’t wrong. Though the 330i was sometime ago and since have had an RR Evoque, a XF ‘300 sport’, a RR Velar and now the XFS. Maybe it’s too soon to give up and buy a 1.4L fridge with wheels, but at the same time I can’t see many good options to meet the current requirements other than a GTI.

We part exchanged a Qashqai for an Xtrail 2 years ago as we found the Qashqai space no better than your average hatchback.
They are both dull cars that I would never choose to own again, they seem to depreciate quite badly too but this may suit you if you buying to run into the ground.
I’d probably look toward the Kia or Hyundai if it has to be an suv but my money personally would go on an estate car.

Why a relatively dull hatchback and an SUV? Why not an SUV and something properly fun like a two seat convertible or something?

If I am ferrying the family around, it would make no difference if I was in a Qashqai or a diesel Golf.

Thanks for the thoughts.

So SUV as planning for a family and my wife is convinced that a SUV will provide more space, a nicer driving position and easier to lift in/out.

The ideal scenario is a F20 330d/335d touring (which I drive and for family trips / weekends away) and a small efficient hatch-back - but I'm not there at the moment.

So I'm trying to figure out what I can do within the current constraints as I see them. One of which is the second car needs to be capable of carrying a baby, so unfortunately can't be a 2 seater!

I'd suggest a Ford Focus ST for your hatch option, either petrol or diesel in budget with the doors and mileage you stipulate, Theres a good selection of them on Autotrader
