Hello Petrol-heads

looking at getting a new car and ideally need something that i practical and with a bit of grunt. my budgets 20,000 pounds and i need something that is practical, five doors with a decent boot, toward an estate, and relatively fast but nothing to much over 300bhp. I do mainly short trips but would like it to be comfy for the longer run. i do around 11,000 miles a year so it needs to be sort of economical i dont mind if its a few years old. i dont really want a BMW or a merc but would appreciate help on this to give me some pointers in the right direction...thanks

Honda Civic Type R FK2, on the motorway it's a bit noisy but they are very practical cars and will fit 3 adults in the back.

My friend gets around 34mpg from mainly city driving in his plus.

Why the rude tone? Idiot. I wont need luck thanks, I will probably need to drop the price. Im happy to listen to offers.

I'd rather buy a car privately with the backing of a 1 year manufacturer warranty than a 3 month warranty from a back street garage. But then were all different.

Did I was say he is wrong? On today's market, it is probably £5k over priced.

I stuck on a free ad, for a price that was 1.2k over what wbac offered 2 weeks ago, starting at a high price.

I got a sarky comment back which I felt was rude. Please leave it, I really dont care. We all have much bigger problems I'm sure. Sorry OP, didnt mean to derail your thread!

I have posted befire on PH why I really like the xe. Comfortable, but fun in dynamic mode. Not too bad on fuel - pretty decent on a long run. If you want to stay away from the germans, perhaps have a look at one

XEs are a weird one. Lots of owners love them, but lots of owners seem to do nothing but moan about them. JLR don't have the best record, but there's plenty of them on the road. So, get one with a warranty.

I had the same budget and the same quandary. I debated with myself for months. I discounted BMWs (don't like runflats), Mercedes (every Merc dealer I've ever been in has been horrendous), I eventually narrowed it down to an Audi A4 Avant TFSi. I opted for the 2 litre over the 1.4, and I absolutely love the car. The quality and refinement are exceptional, the ride and comfort are just fine, the engine is a peach. in the real world 197 bhp is plenty and I like getting over 45 mpg on a run (50 mpg on the drive home). I bought a 3 year old Sport model, which seem to be rare, as most are the S Line model. I can't recommend it highly enough
