Lease car delivery. Mental business model.

So a couple of days ago I had my new bmw 420i gc lease car delivered. I live near Selby in North Yorkshire and the car was delivered from Wolverhampton. They drove it all the way here with one driver who was all set to walk 7 miles to the nearest train station. Of course I gave the guy a lift and chatted to him about how it all works. The furthest he has had to walk after a delivery was 20 miles!!

He then got the train to York to collect another car to drive somewhere else and had another couple of cars to do after that.

Does anyone else think this sounds absolutely crazy? I also can’t understand why they would deliver my car to bmw near Wolverhampton when there are dealerships in Doncaster and York.

It is strange. You think they'd be entitled to some kind of expenses for taxis/bus.

Or at the very lease provide them with a little fold down bike.

Surely each delivery is a fixed fee paid to deliverer.

Each penny he saves in cost is an extra penny in his own pocket.

He was dressed for hiking though which could just be part of how he sells the idea.

it's been like that for years hence people hitching with trade plates although you do see less of that now even pre Covid!. My Q5 lease arrived Friday from Crewe to SW Scotland, I was expecting driven delivery but it came in a lorry.

When I got my Cupra lease I chose to collect from the dealers in York, but the delivery guy came to the showroom to do the handover as the staff there don't touch the PCH handovers. Funnily enough we both got off the same bus outside the dealership.

I was chatting to him about it and he explained that he used to work for a rail company and had lifetime free travel so could get home from anywhere in the country after delivering a car for free. I suspect this meant he was making the maximum profit possible from his delivery fee.

Once had a car delivered from Exeter to Solihull.

Last one was delivered 5 miles by the dealer leasing manager and a colleague came with him to take him back.
