fun for a few grand? ST220 Estate?

Well. given the pandemic going on it's looking likely redundancies are going to put my plan for something too mad on hold.
I'd previously looked at spending around £6k and you lovely lot pointed me toward an insignia VXR estate - looked ideal!
Sadly, I think i'm going to need to keep a few grand in the bank to give a buffer for a little while - with this in mind, I've been looking at Mondeo ST220 Estates, still seem a bit lively and I've always loved the style of them.

£3,000 and other than needing a bloody good clean, looks a good choice.
can you have more fun for £3,000 in an estate shell? £3k is going to be the absolute max now sadly, need to be slightly sensible with all that's going on and perhaps change it when things pick up again.

The ST220 isn't particularly fun, but as a reasonably quick do anything motor they make a lot of sense.

I'm not too fussed about the tax side of things really, more a case of having something nice but able to put a smile on my face every now and then
I had an A5 3.0 TDI which was great for the smile factor, but just didn't do anything else for me, no real rear access and an all but unusable boot. That was only 240bhp so I don't think I need to go insane, it's all about getting the balance with the cash at hand and requirements.
I won't be buying anything at the mo as i'd want a proper test drive and there's no point buying it to sit on the drive but would like a firm choice sorted for when we do go back to normal.
The Mondeo is still top of my list at the mo, the insurance is cheap, car's pretty cheap and still fairly up to date inside. Whilst a scoob would no doubt be more fun, they are pig ugly in estate form and the inside is decades out of date. I still want to be able to look at it and think "yeah not bad that"
I mean I loved my SRI Vectra, that looked great and served me well especially being £2,000! only replaced it with the A5 and that cost considerably more to fix it's niggles.

I'm currently running about in a 2006 Passat B6 2.0 TFSI Estate. Full leather, heated seats, electric everything, all the toys, 6 speed manual, remapped to 270BHP, quick, mega comfortable and good to drive. Also came with one of the most vast service histories ever. When my "other" daily is fixed up in the next month or two and I come to move this on, I don't expect I'll get more than £2500 for it at the very most and for a large, well-equipped, quick and economical petrol car I can't think of more for that kind of money.
