Bought Car Now What Re: V5 ?

Hi,

I was asking here about buying a new car the other day...

Well I got one, could not wait.

So it arrives from a car dealer and I have the V5 in the previous owners name.

We asked the dealer what do we do with the V5 ?

We were told that WE need to do it online ...

How do we do this please ?

The only way I can see to do it ourselves is if I lie on the transfer ownership gov site and answer the first question

the below is from the correct page on the Gov. Website, i.e "bought a car"

Bought a vehicle

You must tax the vehicle before driving it, or declare that it’s off the road (a SORN). The tax is not transferred to you when you buy the vehicle.
The person you bought the vehicle from should give you the green ‘new keeper’ slip so you can tax the vehicle.
They should then post the log book (V5C) to DVLA or tell DVLA online you’re the new keeper.
If you do not receive a new log book within 6 weeks, you can register your vehicle yourself.
If the seller gives you the log book
Fill in:
section 2 with your name and address if you have a new style log book (with multi-coloured numbered blocks on the front cover)
section 6 if you have the older style log book
Send your log book to DVLA.

The person you bought the vehicle from should give you the whole log book (V5C) so you can register the vehicle in another country.

the V% being in the old owners name seems to suggest they're selling it on behalf of the old owner rather than you're buying it from the trader.....seems dodgy to me but I'm probably wrong.

They should be doing the transfer - hell I sold a motorbike last week and did it, takes all of 30 seconds.

I mean you can do it yourself if you have the full V5 - did they sign the sections they need to i.e. "selling your vehicle"

The trader has given the proof of transfer printout from gov.uk shows that in February the car was transferred into the traders business name.

I will email the seller the 11 digit V5 No. and ask them to do it ?

Otherwise I am lying on the online form that I am either the previous RK or the Trader.

And If I complete part 6 on the V5 those instructions from gov.uk only apply "if the seller has given you the V5" and there is no registered keepers signature on the V5 on part 8 so it will be invalid anyway ?

yeah if they've not signed it your V5 isn't yours - essentially nothing separating you from someone who's burgled someone and nicked the car and found the log book.

They need to transfer it to you, they could do it only in a few seconds but I wouldn't part with any money unless that's sorted....if you haven't already!

No, that's not right, as V5 completion doesn't transfer ownership. V5 is just the registered keeper, not the owner. OP is the new owner and will have correspondence and a receipt to evidence - let's not be melodramatic!

OP - I had this with a car I bought last year. It's also quite common to receive a V5 for a new car that hasnt been signed by previous owner (particularly buying from auction)....it doesnt matter and DVLA doesnt need the signature - your dog could sign it for all the validity the signature has. If you now have the V5, I'd just photo/scan it, and ask the dealer to do it on the gov.uk website - it'll take him two mins. If not, you could do it on his behalf if necessary (but you shouldn't need to!).
