Early ones pre 2015 had lots of issues with gearboxes and often brakes wore out quickly.

Later 1.6 has manifold and EGR issues which often put them into limp mode.

The most reliable van we find is the 2.2 Transit Custom or Transporter.

Mine is 5/6 years old. New shape sportive on 34k miles.

No major issues. Had a sensor go which didn’t trigger the dpf regeneration and that caused limp mode. My local non-vauxhall garage had it for 2 weeks diagnosing the fault. They admitted to doing it on the cheap so working on it in between other cars as I had an op anyway.

Cost including a service and new battery was £600.

There was a coolant leak before where a hose burst. Quick repair.

Another issue was a stone through the aircon rad but that’s not the vans fault.

They do say it’s a common issue as the gaps in the grill are large so stick chicken wire behind the grill.

No real issues tbh. Still looks new today. No gearbox or turbo/engine issues.

Mileage is low but it’s a London van so stop/start and speed bumps so I go through brake pads a bit and get 24mpg. I use all the revs though (up to 3/3.5k) with a loaded van.

I’d have one again but if you’re in London then make sure it’s euro 6 and the new shape had both 5 and 6..
6 has adblu. 5 doesn’t.

Adblu is another saga altogether

I’ve just bought a 62 plate 2.0 dci from a customer of mine who specialises in them. They have a fairly poor rep here for unreliability but in Poland where he’s originally from, they regularly do 1m km with little issue. He puts it down to regular servicing, not the 18k intervals Renault recommend.

I’ve had Renault vans for the last 10 years, all of which have done at least 500 miles a week, serviced regularly, driven unsympathetically for the most part, and none have needed anything major in all that time.

Buy with your eyes open and you’ll be ok.

Yup. Mine is every 24 months but the service light pops up every 10 months as it’s short journeys.
I service regardless of cost.

I've run Renault Trafics since 1988, I buy them new run them for 10 years then throw them away (well sort of I PX them for a new one). My current one is a 2010 Sport LWB which is just approaching 120K miles, I guess I'm an owner driver as such or if the guys who work for me drive I'm generally in the cab.
First thing I did was have mine re-mapped this literally transformed the van in every respect. My vans are full racked out so weigh a fair bit more than usual.
Since the re-mapp it has averaged 40 MPG all of the time. It's fair to say I look after them but I have never had a Traffic fail an MOT. When we ran a Transit too it failed it's first MOT despite a strict maintenance regime, other vans we have run have just not been as good.
I haven't bought a new van as I'm not that keen on the design. so this one will go on for another five years as far as I'm concerned.

Current works van is a 68 plate and been mine since new.

So far so, up 80k currently.

Prior to this,I had a 13 plate with 135k, and that was forever lighting up the dash for emissions/injector etc etc

The fuel guage packed up and the boss just bought me a diesel can rolleyes

Thye do seem to eat brakes and tyres, and we dont load very heavy at all.

Its an OK drive for a Van I guess. More spacious than the Ford by a long shot.

Mine is the 2 litre diesel, I can't remember the company who did the re-map as it was so long ago but I've recently used Celtic on my Mini Clubvan and they were very good. Cost about £300+ which of course over the long term pays for itself. One thing about the remap though I had to replace the two drive-shafts at about 100K this I assumed was probably due to the extra load the re-map put on them.
Just to add my running costs all on Traffic vans were just regular oil and air filter changes nothing more. I stuck to the rather expensive recommended oil although it was cheaper on e-bay.
I've never bought secondhand, but I'm sure you realise that you take a chance with buying secondhand as you don't know if the previous owner had any mechanical sympathy whatsoever.
When my vans have come up for replacement in the past I've always hired a different make for a week just in case anyone makes a better van. I quite liked the VW but the price was just ridiculous compared to the deals you can get on Renault vans.
Comfort wise we had a long running contract at Donington Park raceway and drove from Portsmouth with no problems whatsoever. Just to be clear we only drove up on a Monday and stayed in a Hotel and drove back Thursday didn't drive there and back like idiots in one day.
