Which car to own for 6 months?

The wife has just got a new job and so (post-lockdown) will need to use our 2019 XC60 for the 60-mile daily round trip.

My commute (post-lockdown) will return to a mostly 15-mile round trip most plus one weekly 100-150 mile round trip.

I do have a place on the list for a Polestar 2, but delivery looks unlikely to be earlier than August-September 2020.

In the meantime, I would like to drive something that is easy to buy and will be easy to sell again in 6 months’ time.

I have dismissed a short-term 6-month lease as at circa £500 per month this seems like a rather expensive option.

Is short-term ownership the most sensible solution? What would be the most appropriate sort of car to go for?

A sensible shed.
Bought well you might make a profit after 6 months use.
Toyota, Honda ,something with reliable reputation.

You need to buy privately and then sell the same way. I would look for mainstream makes such as BMW, Mercedes and VW etc just because there is a vast array of choice and they are easy to sell on.

I run my daily driver this way buying and selling them on after 10 to 15k with as little expense as possible. I have had in the last year both a Volvo V40 and a BMW 528i just because I seek out bargains and then sell them on before they drop in value too much.

Fortunately I sold my BMW just before lockdown as I now have no work and no income for the foreseeable future. I just have my fun cars left although they are no use either if we can't drive.

It may depend on your line of work but you could be looking at only a 3 month window here if the delivery date is August and you are wfh for a good while yet. I’d buy a snotter for a grand in your shoes.

Anything ordinary will have plenty of buyers and sellers. Any odd will have few buyers (when you want to sell). I would go for the former, and keep it clean. As said a Honda or a Ford, Focus or Fiesta.
