Bargain Barge for work - £3k

I’ve decided after a talk with the other half that I am best buying a cheap car for work. As I am only using it for work and weekend runarounds

Decent Boot
Not sure whether Petrol or Diesel as I’m only doing 4K a year
Around £300ish on tax - any less is a bonus
Decent on fuel
Cheap to maintain and service - basically not a money pit.
If it has lots of options that would be great

Any recommendations would be great

The Mondeo is not a bad option. Would a Diesel be okay? As I was thinking of taking the car for a run of a weekend on the motorway. Or better just sticking to petrol.

None of those are better cars than what I listed, also if you wanted an estate car then you EV thread was pointless.

If you want some type of estate then go for a Mazda5:

I don’t think it was pointless, priorities change and I’ve had to reduce my money to pay for other things that were of more importance.

That Toyota is an incredibly sensible car to buy, it's got cockroach DNA and at that money you really can't go wrong.

Not too keen on Mazda. So you don’t think something like an Avensis is a good car? I’ve seen one with low mileage and full Toyota Service History. The car doesn’t have to be an estate either I had just seen a few.

SAAB 2010/11 Twin turbo 1.9 diesel, nice, fast (180bhp), fully equipped, great seats of course - £30 tax on the saloons. Perfect shed barge for motorway eating, mid-range pull still surprises me.

Glad I got my bargain, £3k

Not bad but I only do 4K miles a year so a disel would cause a lot of issue.

I bought my immaculate Saab 9-5 Aero for a bit less than 3k, it's a lovely bargain barge. It's going up for sale after lockdown restrictions have been relaxed, but it will be missed.

I’ve had a few people have them and have issues. But I will have a look.
