In the current circumstances we all find ourselves in due to CV19 we've dumped our second car as have no use for 2 cars for the foreseeable future.

That said I've been giving some thought to what to do about 'backup' transport once things start to get back to normal at some point and decided that having something boring sat on the drive just for the sake of a < 5k miles per year is a waste of an opportunity.

The plan in my head is to initially sink £10k into something interesting with a great engine that is likely to suffer minimal depreciation over a 2 year period. Then every 2 years move it on and top up the proceeds from sale to £20k, £30k, £40k etc.

Options don't need to be particularly practical or ridiculously fast as have that covered with our main car, just capable of fitting someone who's 6 ft 4" in the drivers seat along with a single passenger, able to sit on a drive when not in use without rusting away and sound great. Also not overly concerned with running costs at this point.

So what would be your choices for a list of cars that fit the bill to tick off a bucket list of great ICE powertrains?

My thoughts as a starter for 10. Essentially the most interesting and best sounding cars at each price point I can think of which hopefully wouldn't fall in value like a stone over 2 years and < 10k miles of use.

Porsche Cayman 987S - £10k

Mercedes SL63 AMG - £20k

Maserati GranTurismo S - £30k

Jaguar F-Type R - £40k

Audi R8 V10 Spyder - £50k

Seems like a nice idea, why have some dull on your drive IF you afford not too.

Stepping idea could actually work although I don’t think it would work for me, 10 years ago between a Alfa GTV v6, Lotus Elise and S2000 I picked the Alfa, the others rose it price quite soon after. Also I couldn’t and haven’t brought myself to selling it.

The cars listed seem so cool, don’t know if once in the 20k bracket I’d ever want to sell any. Will be game over.

OP, did you already sell your second car during covid, didn’t know that was popular. You might just have the pragmatic mind set for this adventure

Too many fast saloons for my liking ZX, and already got one of those. (Model 3 P)

I'm done with BMW I think and a few choices there that I would suggest lack a great powertrain (4C, Evora) or that I could even fit in. smile

That 997 GT3 is bloody lovely though. smile

We had a BMW i3 from Evezy as a second car that was costing £399 a month all in. Hadn't had a massive amount of use since the Tesla turned up in December and CV19 was the final straw. Fortunately the agreement was monthly so cancelled at the end of March.

This is what got me thinking. £400 a month with zero return after 2 years for a car to sit around is pissing money up a wall. Rather spend a bit more, tick off a few experiences from the list (V8's etc.) whilst we still can and hopefully lose a lost less per month in depreciation than the i3 was costing us anyway.

Funny you mentioning the GTV. I was looking at a GTV V6 Cup as a possible starter £10k car (with a bit of creep obviously).

Ah returning a additional rental makes sense and your reasoning for having an experience with some interesting cars.

Once you get started it will be interesting Readers thread material and 2 year interval will fly by.

Would you be putting say £500 a month to finance the next purchase and hopefully only minor maintenance?

GTV v6 is definitely a car to experience, lovely car to drive and looks sublime in and out.

The cup versions do command a premium, not sure why the gap, but they are rare. That one you linked looks very nice, really hard to price these kinds of cars. Something you’ll have to start getting good at wink

I wouldn’t rule out a 4c, had a passenger ride around Thruxton, sounded awesome and went round the corners so well, braking late. But lots of lovely metal with cooler engines to pick from I know.
