Hello all and firstly sorry for this post, I know there is millions of these because I’ve read most of them...

Here’s my predicament.

So I’ve come from cars in the kind of 10k range, mostly hot hatches because I can keep away from them.
I’ve had 205/309 gti’s ,Renault 5 turbos, mk2 golf’s up to mk5 gti’s. Throw in the odd 328i sport e36 and a navara for work.

My last car was a rs250 Megane cup which I bough after a love affair with my track r26 but with my family having a growth spurt I sold the Megane on after not really warming to it that much it was completely standard so it had the potential to become a great car but I sold it on in any case.

So to today, we have a 3 month old and 13 year old to ferry around, my wife has a seat Leon 5f 184 tdi dsg which is a great hack for day to day duties.

I recently sold a mk5 gti that I had as a stop gap but now I need my own car for when my wife is at work and I have the kids.
I don’t need a car to commute to work as I have a vehicle for that.
So here’s where I’m at, I can’t stand boring cars like most of us. I was looking into a 335d touring just before the lockdown begun but now I’m going fairly cold on them, so here’s the list. The budget is £28k which is probably a waste of money for a car I’ll hardly be using but I don’t drink smoke or waste money so 🤷🏻‍♂️

335d/40i

B9 Audi s4

B9 s5

F80 m3 (not sure it’s possible to get a decent one in budget?)

As for hot hatches I love the new Megane and rs3’s that are in range but I’m not sure they’ll be big enough.

So where would your money go, I’m open to new ideas!

I have had a 330i for a few years now. They are boring. They are too competent and quiet for my liking.

I ran a MINI clubman S whilst my kids were younger. We had a roof box for when we went away on longer trips.

Personally, I would choose the hatchback you want, rather than a competent but boring BMW or Audi.

I've got the 340i touring and you'll get a great one for that price but look for a pre June 18 so you don't get the DPF filter in them.

I have a 8 month old and it's a great all round car with some Michelin 4s on the corners. Subtle and gentle when the kids are in the car and yet a monster when you you're on your own.

I looked at the S4 myself just couldn't get on with it when I test drove it.

This is Pistonheads. The default answer is MX5.

(What was the question?)

Thanks.

Today I’m looking into golf r estates, not the most engaging but a hell of a lot more affordable and in some cases more practical.

At this price point one of your biggest costs will be depreciation so I'd be looking for the hottest of (if a Golf R Estate is big enough then these are) hot hatches to lessen that curve:

CLA 45 AMG Estate

RS3

Polestar V60

I'd go for a super saloon myself, they're a bit more special & will have already been though the worst of the curve:

M6 Gran Coupe

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

F80 M3 these are the pick out of this & the M4 looks wise also the M3 is rarer which'll benefit you later down the line, I didn't get on with my F80 but lots of people have so don't let that put you off looking at one.

IS-F a real grower of a car & with running costs on par with a 340i/S4
